Women's Soccer Recap: Truman 1, Missouri-St. Louis 0

KIRKSVILLE - - Junior Alexis Heffernan's 85th minute goal helped the Truman women's soccer team complete a perfect regular season at home on Friday afternoon, as the Bulldogs stayed in the mix of GLVC elites with a 1-0 victory against Missouri-St. Louis at the Bulldog Soccer Park.

Heffernan's tenth shot of the day was the difference-maker, as her ninth goal of the year came courtesy of a Megan Whitehead cross with 5:28 left on the second half clock. After a relatively tight first half that saw both teams getting at least one good look at goal, the Bulldogs (11-3-2, 9-2-2 GLVC) handled possession throughout much of the second 45 minutes. Truman out-shot UMSL (6-8-1, 4-8-1 GLVC) 16-10 overall, including a 10-3 edge in the second half.

Meanwhile, on the other end, Katie Mattingly completed her fifth shutout in seven starts, as the freshman made three saves on UMSL shots on goal. She lowered her season goals-against average to 0.35 in more than 770 minutes of action.

Whitehead and Megan Frkovic added three shots apiece to wrap up the Bulldogs' offensive numbers.

With the victory, Truman assured itself at worst a tie for fourth place in the GLVC standings after next Wednesday's regular season finale. However, the Bulldogs own the tiebreak against either team that could catch them, meaning a first-round home match on Sunday, Nov. 2, is locked in place.

In the meantime, the Bulldogs hit the road as part of a split weekend, with the purple and white visiting Maryville (6-6-3, 5-6-2 GLVC) on Sunday (Oct. 26) at noon. The Saints picked up a 1-0 road victory at Quincy on Friday night.
