Volleyball Recap: Truman 3, Rockhurst 2

KIRKSVILLE - - Junior middle blocker Emilee Walters' career-high 15 kills paced four Bulldogs in double-figures on Saturday afternoon, as the Truman volleyball team rallied in the final stages for a 3-2 home victory against Rockhurst in Pershing Arena.

Truman (13-2, 9-0 GLVC) ran its win streak to 11 with the victory and increased its lead in the Great Lakes Valley Conference West division to two full games on the Hawks, who suffered just their second loss of the season and dropped to 12-2 overall (7-2 GLVC).

The back-and-forth match started out brutally for the 'Dogs, as Rockhurst dug 36 balls in the opening frame and hit .321 to go on top 25-17. Truman had 32 digs of its own in the opening set; however, offensively the squad recorded just a .113 clip.

Truman righted the ship in the second set, hitting .368 and getting seven kills on nine swings from Walters en route to a 25-19 win. Walters had two blocks in the set, while both junior Abby Heise and freshman Jasmine Brown put away four kills apiece.

The third set started the tone for the rest of the match, as both teams swung hard and often against a pair of stout defenses. Neither team hit better than .200 in the frame, but the six lead change swing set went Truman's way by a 25-20 edge.

RU rallied in the fourth, leading for most of the set on its way to forcing a fifth set with a 25-22 decision. The Hawks hit .209 and got five kills from Preecy Seever in the set, while Truman hit just .140 with six kills in the set coming from Brown.

Truman took a 7-6 lead in the fifth set, before RU scored three straight to put two points between themselves and the 'Dogs at 9-7. The squads sided-out to 12-10 Rockhurst, before back-to-back kills from Walters and sophomore Kayla Bastian knotted the score at 12-all. Out of RU's first timeout of the set, the Hawks committed an attack error to force a second timeout.

Heise dropped a serve between two Hawks on the back row for an ace at 14-12, before Walters pounced on a second ball for the match-clincher.

Walters finished with 18 points on the day, with 15 kills coming alongside four block assists and a solo block. Meanwhile, Heise (14 kills), Brown (13 kills), and Bastian (10 kills, 11 digs) each reached double-digits, with junior Ali Patterson adding eight kills and four blocks. Senior Meghan Zimmerman finished with 53 assists and a career-best 23 digs for a double-double, while fellow senior Abby Moser's 28 digs tied for the match high.

Truman hit .199 for the day on 196 total swings, while Rockhurst countered at .209 on 201 attempts. The Bulldogs finished plus-six in serving with six aces and four errors to RU's three aces and seven errors, while also out-digging the guests 98-94. RU did compile 13 blocks to Truman's 10, but the Bulldogs' 59% side-out mark topped RU by two points.

The Bulldogs are off until next Friday night when they visit Drury (8-6, 3-6 GLVC) at 7 p.m. in Springfield.
