Briggs' Second Half Push Drives Bulldogs Into Quarterfinals

Highlight: Amy Briggs scored 17 points in the final 10 minutes of the game to lead Truman from just a two-point lead to a victory in the first round of the GLVC Tournament. The Bulldogs advance to play No. 3 seed Lewis (Ill.) at 6:00 p.m. Thursday at the Ford Center in Evansville, Ind.
 
KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – Amy Briggs' exploded for 17 points in the final 10 minutes of Sunday's first round game of the Deaconess Great Lakes Valley Conference to lead the Truman Women to a 70-58 victory over the William Jewell Cardinals. The Bulldogs advance to play Lewis (Ill.) on Thursday night at 6:00 p.m.
 
The Bulldogs shot a dismal 29% and were just one of 11 from beyond the arc in the first half but led by nine at 31-22 behind a 27-17 rebounding advantage, 11 on the offensive end and had just three turnovers.
 
The Cardinals chipped away in the second half and closed the gap to 42-40 with 10 minutes left. That's when Briggs took over. The senior buried three triples and scored 17 of her game-high 22 points  as the Bulldogs raced away from William Jewell to earn the trip to Evansville and the quarterfinal round.
 
The Bulldog post play started strong as Michalina Tomczak scored 10 points and had nine rebounds and Bianca Szafarowicz added 13 points with also nine boards to join Briggs in double-figures.
 
Chelsea Meeks paced the Cardinals with 27 points but picked up her fourth foul of the game with 9:58 to play when Jewell trailed by just two. She was the only Cardinal player in double-figures as the team shot 41% from the floor and 29% from three.
 
Truman moves on to face the East Division champion Lewis (Ill.) Flyers on Thursday night at 6:00 p.m. Lewis defeated the Bulldogs 98-72 back on January 3 in Romeoville, Ill.
