Volleyball Recap: Truman 3, Missouri-St. Louis 1

ST. LOUIS - - Ali Patterson hit .459 with a match-high 17 kills, while Allie Brak, Kayla Bastian, and Meghan Zimmerman each recorded double-doubles in a 3-1 victory for Truman volleyball at Missouri-St. Louis on Friday night. The Bulldogs won their seventh straight with Friday night's victory and improved to 5-0 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

Truman (9-2, 5-0 GLVC) played a truly grinding match with the host Tritons (6-4, 3-2 GLVC), as the two squads combined for 211 digs and 408 hitting attempts in the four-setter. The Bulldogs' 104 team digs finished just eight shy of a single-match four-set program record.

The Bulldogs edged out UMSL in a pair of close sets to start the match, with Truman winning 25-23 and 25-22 to carry a 2-0 lead into the intermission. Out of the break, the teams battled to 12 ties and three lead changes in the third set all the way to 24-all, before UMSL forced a pair of Truman attack errors to send the match to a fourth frame.

Truman led 16-14 in the fourth set before hitting the gas and leaving the Tritons behind, fueled by a 5-0 burst that featured three Bastian service aces. UMSL would pull to within four on two occasions, but the Bulldogs finished the match with Patterson's 17th kill of the night for a 25-19 decision.

Four Bulldogs finished with double-figure points, led by Patterson's 21 behind 17 kills, six block assists, and one ace. She failed to commit a single error on 37 swings, finishing her hitting line at .459 for the night. Meanwhile, Brak finished with 16 kills and 12 digs, while Bastian tacked on 11 kills and 23 digs to go alongside three block assists. Zimmerman finished with 57 assists and 16 digs, with Abby Moser posting a season-best 31 digs along the back line. Sidney King also reached double-figures in digs with 13, while Emilee Walters put away nine kills and added a pair of blocks.

Truman hit .210 for the match and limited UMSL to just a .139 attack line on nearly 210 total swings. The Bulldogs also sided-out at a 61 percent rate and out-blocked the Tritons 8-5.

"It truly was a hard-fought match, as both teams worked incredibly hard for each point," head coach Ben Briney said. "These are the matches that make you better, and I'm really proud of the team for how we stayed in the point throughout many of the long rallies seen tonight."

With the Bulldogs picking up a victory, coupled with Rockhurst's four-set loss at Drury, Truman is now the last unbeaten conference squad at 5-0. The Bulldogs are one game clear of both RU and Missouri S&T in the GLVC West division

The Bulldogs finish a two-day trip to the St. Louis area on Saturday with a 3 p.m. match at Maryville. The Saints earned a win against Quincy on Friday night to improve to 6-5 overall (2-3 GLVC).
