DES MOINES – Conley Wilkins two-yard vault over the Truman defensive line gave the Drake Bulldogs a 13-7 overtime victory over the Truman Bulldogs on Saturday night. Truman will host Langston (Okla.) next week in the home opener at Stokes Stadium.

It was a defensive battle most of the night with Truman registering six sacks and eight tackles for loss and held the home Bulldogs to 317 yards of total offense.  Drake limited the purple Bulldogs to 290 yards of total offense and 11 tackles for loss.

Drake struck first on their opening possession when Eric Saubert caught an 11-yard touchdown pass from Andy Rice to cap off a 11-play, 67-yard drive.

Truman tied the game at the end of the first when quarterback Devonte Black used the sneak from a yard out to finish off an eight-play drive.  The biggest play of the drive was a scramble by Black to find Chico Orlando on third and seven to move the ball down to the Drake four.

The Bulldogs moved the ball down to the Drake 22 on their next possession but a series of flags pushed them away forcing one of Jacob Lamp's nine punts on the night.

Dominic Greenlee striped Cody Thibault at midfield that was recovered by Abbate. Garrett White rushed the ball in five of the next seven plays to move the ball down to the 16 but a holding penalty pushed the Bulldogs out to the 25. Roger Howard attempted a 42-yard field goal but drilled the right upright to keep the game tied.

Late in the third, Black connected with Joey Schenck for 55 yards down the right sideline with Schenck slipping inside the pylon for a long touchdown pass only to be negated by another costly Truman foul.  Derek Hammann got 24 yards back on a second and 25 with a shuffle pass completion but the 'Dogs couldn't move the chains and were forced to punt.

The game was played at midfield most of the second half until Drake started their final drive with 3:45 left to play. Drake picked up only their second third down of the game to move the ball across the 50 and the Bulldogs pushed it to the Truman 20 in the final seconds.

Facing a four down and one second on the clock, Ben Tesson attempted a 37-yard field goal that sailed just right of the upright sending the game into overtime.

Truman had the ball first but went nowhere. Howard pulled the 37-yard field goal well left to give Drake a chance to win.

A 17-yard reception by Saubert moved the ball to the three and two plays later Wilkins extended the ball over the goal line for the game winner.

It was the seventh overtime in Truman history (4-3) and the first played on the road. The last overtime was in 2009 against Emporia (Kan.) State.

Black completed 17-of-31 passes for 148 yards with White catching four passes for 29 yards. White had 89 yards on the ground on 24 attempts.
