Women's Soccer advances to first GLVC Championship on PK's

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - One night after being named the Great Lakes Valley Conference's Defender of the Year, senior Jessica Hanson (WILDWOOD, Mo. // Lafayette HS) punched the Truman women's soccer team's ticket to its first GLVC championship match with a game-clinching penalty kick goal to send the Bulldogs past Quincy and through to Sunday's title match.

The Bulldogs and Lady Hawks played to a 1-1 draw through 110 minutes of game action before heading to penalty kicks to determine an advancing team in the GLVC tournament. Quincy's Mackenzie Rief and Truman's Kelsey Murphy (O'FALLON, Mo. // Incarnate Word Academy) each scored in round one, followed by goals by QU's Ashley Burton and Truman's Allison Lockett (O'FALLON, Mo. // Timberland HS).

Quincy took a 3-2 lead through three rounds, as Haylye Markway converted in front of an Alexis Heffernan (ANKENY, Iowa // Ankeny HS) shot off the crossbar. However, Truman came right back in the fourth, as QU's Maddy Kuhlenberg went wide right and Stephanie Williams (WAUKEE, Iowa // Waukee HS) scored to even the tally back at 3-3.

Then, in the final round, QU's Taylor Lindwedel missed, setting up Hanson's heroics to send Truman through to the GLVC title match.

Both goals came in a span of just eight minutes, as Williams found pay-dirt first in the 24th minute for Truman on her sixth of the season. However, in the 32nd minute, QU's Markway put home a rebounded cross.

The match stats were incredibly even for the region's No. 3 (Truman) and No. 4 (Quincy) ranked teams, as both teams took 16 shots, with the Lady Hawks taking an 8-7 edge in shots on goal. With the officially-recorded draw, Truman moves to 13-2-5 on the season, while QU will await word on a probable at-large postseason bid at 13-3-4.

Truman – after falling in the GLVC semifinals each of the past two seasons – will play for its first Great Lakes Valley Conference championship on Sunday at 11 a.m. (CST) against the advancing team from Friday night's semifinal between top-seeded Bellarmine and No. 4 seed Missouri-St. Louis.

Additional Notes:
  • This was the first time in Truman women's soccer history that the Bulldogs have been in a shootout.
  • Truman moves to 10-11-4 against QU all time in the #PawsVsClaws rivalry.
  • The Bulldogs are now 3-2-1 all-time (third season) in the GLVC tournament.
