Volleyball out-duels No. 18 Flyers in five-setter

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. -  - It was an all-out slugfest with nearly 425 total hitting attempts, 240 combined digs, and 19 service aces, but in the end, the Truman volleyball team rose up for arguably its biggest win of the 2015 season on Saturday night, as the Bulldogs handed No. 18 Lewis a 3-2 defeat in Pershing Arena.
 
The Bulldogs (15-12, 8-7 GLVC) earned a much-needed victory after having dropped six of its last seven entering the night, as Truman forced the visiting Flyers (24-4, 12-3 GLVC) into 34 hitting errors in the match. Junior Kayla Bastian put up a career night, leading the Bulldogs both with 14 kills and a career-high 33 digs, as her defensive effort ranked seventh all-time on Truman's career single-match digs chart and marked the most by a Bulldog since Abby Moser totaled 37 against Fort Hays State on Oct. 29, 2011.
 
Lewis sandwiched big set wins (25-15 in set one; 25-16 in set four) around two Bulldog set wins in two (28-26) and three (25-22) to send the teams to a decisive fifth frame. The final set saw seven ties and four lead changes, before the Bulldogs – as it did often throughout the night – rode a Bailey Mason service streak that changed the score from 10-9 to 14-9 before the Flyers could side-out. However, after that kill, the Flyers served it long, giving Truman a 15-10 decision in the final set and its third fifth-set win of the 2015 campaign.
 
Both teams finished with seven blocks, but scoring-wise, that's where much of the similarity stopped, as the Flyers produced 71 kills to Truman's 39 and hit .164 to Truman's .106. However, the Flyers committed 34 errors to just 18 by the Bulldogs, and both teams were effective in the service game with a 10-9 LU edge. The Flyers dug 127 Truman attempts – including a program-record 42 by libero Nicole Yuede – while the Bulldogs countered with a  season-high 113 with five players reaching double-figures.
 
Bastian put away 14 kills on 67 swings, committing just one error, to hit .194 and added an ace and two block assists for 16 total points. Senior Ali Patterson finished as Truman's most efficient hitter, connecting on nine kills and just one error on 19 swings (.421), while she added three block assists and two service aces for 12.5 total points. The third Bulldog reaching double-figure points was Mason, who put down just four kills but served a match- and career-high six aces. She served the most of any player on the night for either team, making 26 serves overall.
 
Senior Abby Heise (18 assists, 14 digs) and junior Kayleen Green (10 assists, 13 digs) each finished with assist-dig double-doubles, while redshirt freshman Claire Wandrey (20), and senior Kassi Schroeder (16) joined that duo and Bastian with double-figure digs. Junior Bailey O'Drobinak and senior Emilee Walters matched Patterson's three blocks to lead all 'Dogs.
 
Aly Schneider led the Lewis offense with 15 kills, while she added five blocks for 18.5 total points.
 
The Bulldogs will return to the court on Tuesday night, when the purple and white visit Quincy at 7 p.m. Truman swept QU in Pershing Arena on Oct. 6.
