Truman's Comeback Falls One Point Short To Rockhurst

Box Score (HTML)

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – A fourth quarter comeback came up one point short as the Rockhurst Hawks defeated the Truman Bulldogs 56-55 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference opener. The Bulldogs will travel to William Jewell on Saturday for another conference game.

Rockhurst (5-1, 1-0 GLVC) took their largest lead of the game at seven points with 6:12 to play in regulation before Truman (5-3, 0-1 GLVC) chipped away. The Hawks led 51-44 but a free throw by Cassidy Clark and a basket by Ashley Hartwig cut it to four.

Truman tried to cut it closer but Rachel Steinhoff's triple was off the mark and Lauren Meyers knocked down a jumper to extend the lead back out to six.

Brooke Bailey, Truman's offensive star on the night, hit a wing three to cut the lead in half and Courtney Strait got a put back on an offensive rebound to make it 53-52 with 3:26 left.  The two teams exchanged steals/turnovers with the Hawks coming out on top following another layup by Meyers with 2:15 left.

The score would remain 55-52 until 19 seconds remaining. Mary Dineen got one of two free throws to make it a two possession game. Bailey hit her third triple of the night with five seconds left to cut the margin to one point. The Hawks missed a pair of free throws at the end but Truman did not have any timeouts left and could not advance the ball quick enough up the floor to attempt a winning shot.

Truman led by nine late in the first quarter but the Hawks found their three-point stroke in the second as they connected on four of six attempts to lead 31-30 at half. Rockhurst took advantage of a slow third quarter start for Truman in which they shot only 27% from the floor going 3-of-11 with two threes in the process.

Bailey set a season high with 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting and joined Courtney Strait (11) and Michalina Tomczak (10) in double figures for Truman. The Bulldogs were limited to 32.7% from the field and struggled at the line hitting 14-of-22 freebies.

Mary Dineen paced Rockhurst with 15 points and Kendall Hart added 13. The Hawks made seven out of 23 three-point attempts and shot 38% for the game. Rockhurst also struggled at the line making five of 11 attempts.
