Women's BB Recap: Bellarmine 61, Truman 58

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Bellarmine (Ky.) University Knights rallied from 10 points down in the final 1:13 to hand the Truman women's basketball team a devastating 61-58 road loss on Thursday night. Michalina Tomczak tied a single-game program record with seven blocked shots while adding a 22-point, 11-rebound double-double.

Senior Allie Norton's third three-pointer with 2:26 to play capped a 9-2 run that gave the Bulldogs a 57-47 lead. The teams then exchanged turnovers, and Norton's three-point attempt with 1:21 left circled out. Raven Merriweather knocked down a three-pointer for the Knights and the rally began.

Tomczak missed the front end of a one and one and Mariah Gador buried another triple to cut the lead down to four points with 46 seconds left. Following a timeout, an offensive foul was called on the Bulldogs during the inbounds play and Whitney Hartlage missed from three but Merriweather corralled the offensive rebound and shot it back to Hartlage, who didn't miss again and the lead was just one point with 31 left.

On the next inbounds play out of a timeout, a pair of Bulldogs collided under the basket and the ball went out of bounds. Morgan Clemons gave the Knights their first lead since early in the first half and a jumper in the paint.

Hartlage fouled Tomczak but the junior center had the front end bounce off the rim. Merriwather was fouled and connected on one of two to give Bellarmine a 59-57 advantage with 13 seconds left. On the missed free throw Tomczak was hacked again and sent to the line with a chance to tie the game and made the first but the second fell off.

Adwell connected on two more free throw with six second left to make it a three point lead. Truman hustled up the court for a tying attempt but Rachel Steinhoff's shot was short.

Norton had a personal 6-0 run to end the first half as Truman took a nine point lead into the locker room. The lead expanded to a dozen with 12 minutes left and was narrowed down to three on a Gador three-pointer at the seven minute mark.

The Knights ended the game with 51 rebounds to Truman's 30 and pulled down 23 offensive boards. Bellarmine shot 34% for the game and was 6-of-22 from three, with three coming in the final minute comeback. Clemons finished with 15 points and 15 rebounds and Gador also scored 15 points.

Truman shot 42% from the floor with Tomczak tying Georgia Mueller's 2007 single-game record with seven blocked shots. The team finished with eight for the game. Tomczak tallied 22 points on 10-of-15 from the floor and pulled down 11 rebounds. Norton finished with 16 points and Courtney Strait ended with a dozen.

The Bulldogs will end the four game road trip on Saturday facing the University of Southern Indiana at 1:00 p.m.
