Wrestling Recap: Missouri Valley 28, Truman 14

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The Missouri Valley College Vikings defeated the Truman Wrestling team 28-14 in a home dual on Thursday night. Rafael Lopez, Devon Fenstermaker, and Helmut Rentschler scored the wins for the Bulldogs.

J.J. Dorrell took a 2-0 lead in the opening contest at 125 but Logan Welch got an early third period takedown and grabbed some back points to win by major decision 12-3.

Ryan Steams defeated Ethan Rentschler 6-3 at 133.

Lopez was tied with Dalton Adams 4-4 entering the second frame and escaped from the down position to take the lead. He scored a takedown a few seconds later and got Adams onto his back for the pin fall victory at the 4:35 mark. That win pulled Truman to within one team point at 7-6.

The Vikings got the six points back in the next match when Jake Ekster pinned Andrew Still in the first period.

Roark Whittington and Alex Destra battled to overtime with Whittington taking a shot in the extra period only to have Destra fight it off and eventually get the winning takedown with 13 seconds left for the 6-4 win.

Fenstermaker had the best comeback of the night in the 165-pound match. A furious end to the first period saw Fenstermaker score a takedown only to be reversed and give up back points as time expired to trail 8-5. A quick escape by Jared Sterling made the score 9-5 in the second. Fenstermaker then went on the attack. He got a takedown with 45 seconds left in the period and entered the third trailing 10-7.

He got a reversal off the third period start to close the gap to 10-9 then was able to not only turn the riding time around but score a three point near fall as time expired to win 13-9.

Missouri Valley would get a decision win at 174 by a 4-2 tally.

The 184 match also had a furious finish. Ryan Ward trailed 6-2 in the second period but fought back to 7-5 entering the third. He was awarded a stalling point with 20 seconds left and got a go ahead takedown with 10 seconds remaining. Dakota Concepcion rolled through the takedown to get the reversal with one second left to win 10-7 with the riding point added in.

Helmut Rentschler took the frustrations out on Justin Whitten. Rentschler trailed 2-0 after one then reversed the second period start and proceeded put Whitten on his back four straight times to lead 14-2. He would end the match in the same way with a final near fall to clinch the 19-2 tech fall victory.

Gabi Musallam ended the dual with a second period fall over Truman's Luke Bornhop.

The Bulldogs fall to 5-4 overall while the Vikings improve to 6-7.
