Softball Recap: Bulldogs Split Day Two of Florida Tournament

CLERMONT, Fla. - - Junior Kelsea Dorsey tossed a six-hit shutout in a 7-0 win against Ohio Dominican, highlighting a split day of action in central Florida against regional competition.

The Bulldogs (4-4) blanked ODU in the opener, before the purple and white fell in extra innings by a 5-3 score in the nightcap to Grand Valley (Mich.) State.

Truman will take Sunday off before battling two more in-region foes – Ferris (Mich.) State and Northwood (Mich.) on Monday afternoon.

Game 1 (Truman 7-0)
The Bulldogs used a seven-run second inning to defeat Ohio Dominican 7-0 in the opening game on Saturday afternoon. Alexis VanNostrand had a pair of hits and three RBI to lead Truman.

After Truman left the bases loaded in the top of the first, the Bulldogs picked up back-to-back walks and an infield bunt single by Nikki Moss to load the bases for Andrea Klipsch. Klipsch then walked on five pitches to earn an RBI and get the 'Dogs on the board. After a Jamie Fowle fielder's choice gunned down a runner at home, VanNostrand cleared the bases with a gapper to right-center – putting the sophomore on third base and the 'Dogs ahead, 4-0. After a strikeout, Ally McReynolds walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch that scored VanNostrand for a 5-0 lead. A Whitney Richardson RBI single and a Devin Gudehus RBI double added runs No. 6 and 7 to grant Truman a big lead.

Dorsey, meanwhile, made it stick and more, as she needed just 91 pitches against ODU (0-10) to earn her third win of the season. She allowed just six hits – all singles – and both walked and struck out one.

Game 2 (Grand Valley State, 5-3; 9 inn.)
GVSU fought back from a 3-1 deficit to force extra innings, then used the international tiebreaker to rally past Truman for a 5-3 decision in nine innings during the Bulldogs' second game of the day.

The Lakers (13-3) opened scoring with a run in the top of the first, but Haley Wells came through with a two-out, two-run home run in the bottom of the second to put Truman on top, 2-1.

Wells then recorded a fielder's choice RBI in the fourth to extend the Bulldog lead to 3-1, before GVSU countered with single runs in the top of the fifth and sixth innings.

Neither team could plate a run in the seventh or eighth, before GVSU pushed across two runs in the top of the ninth to earn the victory.

Liz Leath led the Bulldogs with two of the team's four hits on the day, with Wells' three RBI accounting for production of all of Truman's runs. Kindra Henze pitched all nine innings in the circle for Truman, striking out three and walking two.
