Sunday's Recap

ST. LOUIS, Mo.  – The Truman Baseball took one step closer to securing their spot in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament with a doubleheader split over Missouri-St. Louis on Monday. Kent Frantz's eighth win of the season propelled the 'Dogs to a 10-0 win in the opener; however the Tritons walked off in the nightcap 5-4.

Pitching was the key for the Bulldogs in the series with both Mark Roberts and Frantz not allowing a run in their starts. Roberts pitched seven-plus on Sunday in getting the win while Frantz pitched a seven-inning complete-game to tie the school record for pitching wins in a season with eight.

As a team, Truman's staff posted a 1.78 ERA and walked five Triton runners while striking out 15. Meanwhile, the UMSL staff had a 4.22 ERA and walked 21 Bulldogs to striking out 30.

A pair of local St. Louis products produced for the Bulldogs in the series. Brendan Trimble was five of 10 at the dish with a pair of doubles while Zak Larkin had six hits in 15 at bats with a double and stolen base.

With the four-game series split with the Tritons, Truman is in third place in the GLVC West Division standings with a 19-13 record. The Bulldogs have two more wins than Missouri-St. Louis (17-13) and are a game and a half up in the loss column on Drury and two up on Missouri S&T heading into the final four-game series next weekend at home against Maryville (9-23).

The top three spots in the Division earn a place into the conference tournament plus the next two best winning percentages among all 16 conference teams earn wild card spots.

Maryville will be looking to spoil Truman's senior weekend that will get started on Friday afternoon with a single nine-inning game beginning at 4:00 p.m. The Saints have already been eliminated from contention for the GLVC Tournament.

Game 1 Recap: Kent Frantz continued his impressive freshman season by shutting out the Missouri-St. Louis Tritons 10-0 in the opener and tied the school record for pitching wins in a season. Frantz won his eighth game of the season to tie Jeff Birdsong's 1999 record as he held the Tritons to five hits in his fifth complete-game victory and second shutout of the season.

The Bulldogs scored single runs in the third and fourth inning with Wyatt Fones scoring on a bunt single by Jarod Hahn and Michael Venturella singling in Brendan Trimble.

Michael Venturella grounded out to first but on the return throw back for the double-play the ball sailed and allowed two runs to score to knot things up at four apiece.

Wood started the ninth with a single but was doubled up on a twin killing off the bat of Larkin.

Matt Tometz walked leadoff hitter Daniel Seddon in the Tritons half of the inning. J.J. Kinnevan was hit by a pitch to bring Peter Young into the game with two on. A sac bunt moved the winning run to third.
