Softball Sweeps Pumas to Cap Regular Season

Monday Results:
Game 1 (Truman 1-0) || Game 2 (Truman 3-2)

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - - The Truman softball team earned some positive momentum heading into this weekend's Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament on Monday afternoon, as the Bulldogs battled for two one-run victories against Saint Joseph's (Ind.) College at the Truman Softball Park.

The Bulldogs (32-12, 21-7 GLVC) used a solo home run from senior Andrea Klipsch in game one to win, 1-0, before Truman got another Klipsch blast along with RBIs from senior Ally McReynolds and sophomore Lex Van Nostrand in a 3-2 regular season finale victory.

Juniors Kindra Henze and Kelsea Dorsey each threw complete games to earn their 16th wins of the season.

Truman now advances to Friday's opening round action at the GLVC tournament, to be held in East Peoria, Ill., at the EastSide Centre. The Bulldogs will be the No. 4 seed and will play fifth-seeded Bellarmine (Ky.) at a time to be set by the conference office.

Game 1 Recap
Andrea Klipsch homered in the fourth to break a scoreless draw, and Kindra Henze was magnificent in the circle, as the Bulldogs blanked SJC 1-0 in Monday's opener.

Both Henze and SJC starter Jessica Cates battled early, limiting any sort of offense by either side, until Klipsch stepped to the plate to lead off the bottom of the fourth inning. She then deposited her 15th home run of the season well beyond the left field fence, giving Truman a 1-0 lead.

That would be all the 'Dogs would need, as just three balls left the infield all day against Henze (one for a hit) in a dominating complete game shutout. She allowed just two total hits – an infield single in the third and a double in the fifth – while striking out two and not walking a single hitter.

Both Klipsch and Lex Van Nostrand totaled two hits apiece for the Bulldog offense.

Game 2 Recap
Truman built an early lead and held off a Puma late-inning rally to earn a doubleheader Monday sweep, as the Bulldogs took game two by a 3-2 score.

The Bulldogs scored two in the first, as Klipsch homered to right field for her team-leading 16th blast of the season, before Van Nostrand doubled home Ally McReynolds with two outs for a 2-0 lead.

Truman added another run in the third, as Klipsch, senior Liz Leath, and McReynolds strung together three straight base-knocks for a 3-0 advantage.

SJC would pull to within one in the fifth, as the first two batters reached via a walk and a single before being sacrificed over to second and third with one out. One runner would score off a wild pitch, with the second coming home on an RBI single that was sandwiched between two strikeouts.

However, from there, the Pumas were silenced at the plate, as Kelsea Dorsey completed her seven-inning outing with back-to-back 1-2-3 innings – including a strikeout of the side in the seventh – to seal Truman's 32nd win of the year. Dorsey struck out six and scattered five hits throughout to improve to 16-4 on the year.

Klipsch and Van Nostrand – joined this time by McReynolds – went for multiple hits for the second straight game, as those three and Leath combined to go 7-for-11 at the plate in the game.
