ST.CHARLES, Mo.  – Senior Cody Gardner tossed his 14th career complete game and his second shutout as the Truman Baseball team blanked William Jewell 6-0 in the opening game of the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional on Thursday night. The Bulldogs will face the Drury Panthers on Friday at 7 p.m.

Gardner allowed six hits, struck out four and walked nobody while throwing 115 pitches to earn his team-leading and school record breaking ninth win of the season and 15th for his career. He now jumps one ahead of fellow starter Kent Frantz for season-high honors.

Gardner and WJC starter Austin Kretchmar went through the hitters the first time through each lineup with just two hits between the two teams in the first three innings.

Blake Deaton started the fourth with a hit up the middle and an error by shortstop Coleman Waheed made it first and second when Paul Trenhaile reached. Dave Gambino put Truman on top with a single into left scoring Deaton from second but Trenhaile got caught in a rundown for the first out. Brendan Trimble bounced into a double play to end the inning.

Gardner got his own twin-killing in the bottom of the fourth to erase a leadoff single by Bryan Porting and continued to throw up zeros on the scoreboard as Truman clung to the 1-0 lead.

The dam broke in the seventh. Gambino ignited the big inning with a single up the middle and Trimble doubled to left center to put the first two on. Michael Venturella laced a long single down the right field line scoring Gambino and moving Trimble up to third.

Jarod Hahn tried to surprise the defense by dropping down a bunt and with Trimble hustling down the line scoring to make it 3-0 Bulldogs. T.J. Wood got into the act taking the first pitch he saw through the right side to plate Hahn and a second error by Waheed brought Wood in for the 6-0 lead.

Gardner worked around a pair of singles in the seventh to finish the inning with Waheed striking out with two on. He pitched a 1-2-3 eighth inning but allowed back-to-back singles by Luke Lucchetti and Porting to start the ninth.

Sam Morman lined out to Venturella for the first out and Gardner retired the final two hitters after taking the count full to end the game.

It was Truman's first win in their first NCAA Tournament game.

Deaton, Gambino and Trimble all had two hits for Truman and Hahn added a triple in the ninth. Lucchetti and Porting had five of the six William Jewell hits out of the first two spots in the order.

Kretchmar took the loss to fall to 9-3 on the season.

With the win, Truman will square off against #5 Drury in a winners' bracket game on Friday at 7 p.m. The Bulldogs and Panthers split the four-game season series in Springfield in April. Drury earned a 9-4 win over #2 Grand Valley (Mich.) State in the tournament opener that pitted champions from the postseason tournaments of the Great Lakes Valley Conference and the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference.

In the middle game of the day, Quincy (Ill.) rallied from a 5-0 deficit to defeat #6 Ashland (Ohio) 6-5 in 10 innings. The Hawks will play William Jewell at 3 p.m. after Ashland and Grand Valley meet in the 11 a.m. opener.
