Whitehead Goal Pushes Women's Soccer Past UMSL

ST. LOUIS - - A goal from junior Megan Whitehead early in the second half proved the difference in a tight contest on Sunday afternoon, as the Truman women's soccer team picked up its first Great Lakes Valley Conference win of the season with a 1-0 victory at the University of Missouri-St. Louis.

Quick Recap:
  • Final: Truman 1, Missouri-St. Louis 0
  • Records: Truman (2-1-1, 1-0-1 GLVC) || Missouri St.-Louis (1-1-1, 0-1-1 GLVC)
  • Scoring Summary:

Match Breakdown:
  • UMSL controlled the offensive production in the first half, out-shooting Truman 10-3 overall; however, each team put two shots on goal.
  • After an UMSL header was saved by Truman keeper Katie Mattingly in the 50th minute, the Bulldogs countered the other way, and Whitehead buried a shot into the lower left corner from the far right wing to give Truman the lead.
  • Mattingly put up key saves again in the 64th, 77th, and 87th minutes to help preserve the victory.  She finished with her second straight clean sheet, making six total saves.
  • Both Whitehead and Stephanie Williams took two shots.

Head Coach Mike Cannon Quote:
  • "It was a hard-fought game against a talented, physical UMSL side on the road. We defended well on set pieces and picked our moments to counter-attack and keep possession. We got a great result and another shutout to close the weekend."

Extra Notes:
  • This was the middle match of a three-match-in-five-days stretch for the Bulldogs that began with a 0-0 draw against Maryville on Friday.
  • All four of Truman's goals this season have come in the second half.
  • Today marked Whitehead's fourth career collegiate goal and Maloney's third collegiate assist.
  • Truman is now 10-8-2 against UMSL all-time, including a 3-0 mark since the Bulldogs joined the GLVC prior to the 2013 season. Truman has blanked the Tritons in all three matches (2-0, 1-0, 1-0) as GLVC opponents.

What's Up Next:
  • The Bulldogs travel back to the St. Louis area on Tuesday night for a non-conference tilt against Lindenwood. Truman will kick off against the Lions at 7 p.m. on the Lindenwood campus in St. Charles.
