Women's Soccer Kicks Off 2015 with 3-1 Victory

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - - Truman State University seniors Alexis Heffernan and Megan Frkovic provided the firepower in the second half, as the Bulldog women's soccer team opened the 2015 season with a 3-1 home victory against Ferris (Mich.) State on a steamy Friday afternoon.

After Truman (1-0) dominated possession and out-shot Ferris State (0-1) 11-1 in the first half but went into the break scoreless, the purple Bulldogs took little time to grab the lead against the red Bulldogs in the second stanza. Following a foul just off the left side of the FSU penalty area, Frkovic stepped up and took it upon herself to smash a shot off the post and into the net to put Truman on top, 1-0, in the 51st minute.

Then, less than six minutes later, Heffernan scored her 20th career goal from 25 yards out off a pass from Stephanie Williams, pushing Truman's edge to 2-0. She would then log her second goal of the game in the 86th minute, finishing a Casey Maloney pass for a 3-0 lead.

Ferris State would change the visitor's scoreboard digit, however, when Kate Kelly got past the last Truman defender in the 89th minute and banged a shot off the post and in to reach the 3-1 final.

For the game, Truman out-shot FSU 20-10 overall and 8-3 on net, while also earning five corner kicks to Ferris' one. Katie Mattingly got the win in net, making two saves in her 90 minutes of work under a nearly-cloudless sky.

Truman will return to the field on Sunday afternoon for a test against the two-time defending NCAA-II champion Lakers of Grand Valley (Mich.) State. GVSU plays at Quincy on Friday night and carries the nation's No. 1 ranking into Sunday's bout.
