Volleyball Goes 2-2 at UCM Classic

WARRENSBURG, Mo. - - A second split for the Truman volleyball team capped the opening weekend of action at the UCM Classic, as the Bulldogs defeated Western (Colo.) State 3-1 on Saturday morning before falling by the same score in the early afternoon to St. Cloud (Minn.) State.

Truman – who capped the opening weekend of play at 2-2 for the second straight season – put up a strong block and played solid defense all weekend; however, the purple and white never clicked on offense. The Bulldogs hit just .167 for the trip but did hold its opposition to just a .145 clip. Truman averaged 2.8 blocks per set with 42 total blocks, including 16 during Saturday's four-set opener against Western State.

In that match, Truman had no troubles in sets one, three, and four, but the Mountaineers (1-3) held the purple and white to a negative hitting line in the second set to prevent a sweep. Sophomore Jasmine Brown had 11 kills, while senior Ali Patterson chipped in nine kills and seven blocks. Redshirt freshman Claire Wandrey led all Bulldogs with 17 digs, while redshirt freshman setter Matti Mason finished with 19 assists and six blocks.

Then, in the finale, the Bulldogs squeezed out a tight first set at 25-23 before the Huskies (3-1) rebounded to take the second by a 25-19 score. This time, however, Truman could not rebound, as SCSU hit .238 in the third and a blazing .361 in the fourth to pick up the 3-1 win. Junior Kayla Bastian reached the 20 kill mark on the button and added nine digs, but she would be the only Bulldog in double-figures offensively with Truman hitting just .156 for the match. Mason notched a double-double with 33 assists and 14 digs.

The Bulldogs will head to Pennsylvania next weekend for four matches in California, Pa., beginning Friday with matches against Fairmont (W. Va.) State and host-California (Pa.).
