RECAP: Truman Busts Through Late; Advances In GLVC Tournament

Box Score (HTML)

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The top-seeded Truman Women's Soccer team finally broke through the Southern Indiana defense in the final 10 minutes and scored twice to advance in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament with a 2-0 win.

The Bulldogs (14-1-3) peppered 20 shots, with five on goal and two crossbars, during the first 80 minutes of the contest as the field was tilted in favor of the Truman. Hanna Burke hit the bar with 28 minutes remaining and Stephanie Williams knocked it off the bar six minutes later. Anther cross bar was negated by an offsides call against Truman.

In the 82nd minute, Megan Whitehead sent a cross field ball that found Allison Lockett's head and she was able to redirect it past Courtney Lofland for the eventual game winner. It was Lockett's second goal of the season.

That goal forced USI (9-9-1) to open up their defense and Truman was able to counter four minutes later. A foul was called against the Screaming Eagles just outside the 18-yard box and Kelsey Murphy played the restart into the area where Hanna Burke was able to head it home for the insurance goal. It was Burke's team leading fifth goal of the season.

Katie Mattingly made three saves, the last coming with about 18 minutes left in regulation, as the Screaming Eagles had minimal offensive pressure throughout the game.

The Bulldogs advance to their fourth straight GLVC semifinal round and will face #4 McKendree (Ill.) on Friday afternoon at Carroll Stadium on the campus of Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. Truman defeated McKendree 1-0 in a game that was originally halted by lighting and started the next morning at 7:30 a.m. in Lebanon, Illinois. It was the first conference game of the season.

Match time will be determined early shortly by the conference office.
