SB Recap: Bulldogs Split One-Run Games at UNA

FLORENCE, Ala. - - The Truman State University softball team closed its weekend trip to Alabama with a split, coming from behind to take game one 3-2 before falling by a 4-3 score at the University of North Alabama.
 
The Bulldogs (3-5) gave up solo runs in both the bottom halves of the first and third innings, before drawing even in the top of the fifth. After sophomore Ashley Murphy doubled to lead off, senior Whitney Richardson singled to put runners on the corners with no outs. Junior Valerie Schmidt pinch-ran for Richardson and stole second in front of an RBI single by Michaela Mooney, scoring Murphy and sending Schmidt to third with still no outs. Then, during freshman Brooke VunCannon's at-bat, Mooney took off for second and induced a throw, allowing Schmidt to scamper home with a steal that knotted the game at 2-all. Mooney was stranded on second, however, leaving the inning tied at two apiece.
 
Then, in the seventh, Richardson singled to lead off and was lifted for a senior pinch-runner Nikki Moss, who moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Mooney. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Moss came home two batters later when freshman Christa Reisinger delivered a two-out RBI single for a 3-2 Truman lead. The Bulldogs then got out of the bottom half with a 1-2-3 inning to hand UNA just its fourth loss in 21 games this season.
 
Richardson's two base hits led all Bulldogs, while senior Kelsea Dorsey picked up her third win of the season by tossing a complete game eight-hitter. She struck out three and walked two but stranded seven Lions on base.
 
In game two, the Lions took a 3-0 lead with two runs in the third and a single run in the fourth, before Truman got on the board in the fifth. Mooney drew a hit-by-pitch to lead off in front of sophomore pinch-hitter Kadie Orenstein lacing a single up the middle. Reisinger sacrificed both over for the first out, then, after a strikeout, two runs scored during an at-bat by sophomore Jamie Fowle. Mooney came home on a passed ball during Fowle's at-bat, then the shortstop delivered a single of her own to cut UNA's lead to 3-2. The Lions added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth, but Truman brought the tying run to the plate with one-out in the top of the seventh when Reisinger homered to cut the UNA lead to 4-3. However, a strikeout and a __ closed out the game, forcing Truman to settle for a Saturday split.
 
Truman travel back to Kirksville before hitting the road again next weekend for a five-game in three-day trip to Nashville at the Music City Invitational, hosted by Trevecca Nazarene. Action begins on Friday, Feb. 26, against Huntington (Ind.) at 4 p.m. before doubleheaders on both Saturday and Sunday.
