QUINCY, Ill. - - The Truman State University men's basketball team made program history on Thursday night, winning 20 games in a season for the third straight year after rallying from 12 points down to knock off arch-rival Quincy by an 83-82 score inside QU's Pepsi Arena in the regular season finale.

In 96 seasons of basketball at the University, the 2015-16 team became just the eighth to reach the 20-win plateau and linked with each of the past two teams to string together the first back-to-back-to-back 20-win campaigns in Truman history.

"It was a gutsy performance in the second half by our guys," head coach Chris Foster said during his post-game interview with KRES 104.7 FM after the come-from-behind victory. "We just found a rhythm offensively. Andrew [Vander Zwaag] hit some big three's. It wasn't pretty, but the guys just stuck with it and showed an incredible amount of toughness to get it done."

With the win, the Bulldogs (20-8, 12-6 GLVC) secured the No. 6 seed in the upcoming Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament, which will begin on Sunday (Feb. 28) afternoon with a first-round home date against No. 11 seed Missouri-St. Louis (12-15, 6-12 GLVC) at 3 p.m. in General John J. Pershing Arena.

The Bulldogs led early but fell behind by as many as 12 at 45-33 with 2:54 to play in the opening half. Truman was able to chip away before the break, cutting the deficit to just 47-39 at the intermission, before hanging around within striking distance of the Hawks (18-9, 12-6 GLVC) throughout much of the second half.

Then, with Quincy clinging to a 73-70 lead, redshirt senior Andrew Vander Zwaag connected on a three-pointer to bring the Bulldogs back even at 73-all with 6:08 to play in the game. Two possessions later, redshirt junior Cory Myers hit a three-pointer of his own to put Truman on top, 76-75, with the game never more than a one possession difference the rest of the way.

The biggest shot of the night came out of a Truman timeout with 1:35 to play, as, with the score knotted at 80-all, Vander Zwaag shook loose and buried his seventh triple of the game to put the Bulldogs on top, 83-80. The Hawks would get two free throws on the other end to cut the gap to one, but the teams traded turnovers before a missed layup by Truman gave the Hawks the ball back with eight seconds to play. As Quincy drove to the hoop, Cory Myers was credited with a clean takeaway, and the 'Dogs walked 94 feet to the other end of the court with 0.5 seconds on the clock and an 83-82 lead. Two missed free throws later (the second intentionally missed), Truman walked out of Pepsi Arena as winners against Quincy for the eighth straight time – extending the longest streak by either team in the 118 all-time meetings between the programs. The series record moved to 59-59 with Thursday night's victory for the 'Dogs.

Five Bulldogs finished in double-figures offensively, led by Vander Zwaag's 24 points and seven rebounds off the bench on 8-of-9 shooting (7-of-8 three-point FG). Junior Billy Daniel fueled the Bulldogs with 16 first-half points on his way to 19 for the game, as he added seven rebounds and a pair of steals. Senior Cole Myers (15), Cory Myers (10), and Kanaskie (10) also reached the double-figure line. For the game, the Bulldogs shot 45.1% from the floor and hit 12-of-30 from three-point range.

Despite QU winning the rebounding battle 47-34, the Bulldogs out-scored the Hawks in second-chance points, 11-10, and turned 18 Hawk turnovers into 15 points on the other end. The Bulldogs, meanwhile, turned it over just 10 times and held QU to 11-for-33 (33.3%) from the floor in the second half, including a 2-for-12 (16.7%) mark from three-point range in the final 20 minutes.

The Bulldogs will host UMSL on Sunday afternoon for the second time this season, having defeated the Tritons by a 67-62 score on January 21 in Kirksville.
