EVANSVILLE, Ind.  – Mason King's sac fly RBI broke a 1-1 tie and Peter Young picked up the save as the Truman Baseball team knocked off #23 Southern Indiana 3-2 in the final game of their weekend trip.

After early fireworks and huge offensive numbers the past couple of games, it was a pitcher's duel between starters Devin Williams of USI and Nate Lukas of Truman.

The two teams were scoreless through four until USI broke through with one-out single by Kyle Niemeier to go on top 1-0. Lukas would retire the next two hitters to strand two runners in scoring position.

Two out heroics by the Bulldogs tied the game in the seventh. Brendan Trimble started the rally with a single up the middle and a wild throw by USI's third baseman on a ball hit by Chris Iliopoulous allowed Trimble to race around the bases to score.

Joey Gardner continued his early season success with a leadoff single to start the eighth. Jon Lyons pinch ran and went to third on another throwing error by a USI infielder on a ball put in play by T.J. Wood. Truman had runners on second and third and Mason King lifted a sac fly to right center to score Lyons for the 2-1 lead.  A third error in the game would be key that allowed Wood to score from third giving Truman a two-run lead.

Lukas would walk the first batter he faced in the eighth and was lifted for Alex Hoffmann. USI would load the bases so Coach Dan Davis summoned his closer Peter Young from the pen. Young fanned Trent Gunn to leave them loaded.

The Bulldogs went quietly in the ninth and Young returned to the mound. He walked the leadoff hitter Niemeier and was called for a balk moving him to second. Young struck out Buddy Johnson for the first out then gave up a single to right to Sam Griggs to put runners at the corners. Another balk was called bringing in Niemeier and moving Griggs down to second.  Kyle Kempf flied out to Wood in center but Griggs moved up 90 feet to third. Young finished the game in style by striking out cleanup hitter Drake McNamara for his first save of the year and seventh of his Truman career.

Trimble was 2-for-4 at the plate for the Bulldogs and Lukas earned the win going seven innings, allowing eight hits and one run.

The Bulldogs are scheduled to open up a 10-game homestand on Friday afternoon when they welcome Bemidji (Minn.) State University to the Truman Baseball Park for a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
