KIRKSVILLE, Mo.  – The 2016 Truman Baseball home opener started with a bang but Bemidji State was able to gain the doubleheader split with the Bulldogs on Friday afternoon. Truman won the opener 7-0 but fell in the nightcap 11-3.

Mark Roberts became Truman's career leader in innings pitched and had a gem to start the home season. Roberts set down the Beavers in order in the top of the first and Truman exploded for three runs in the bottom of the inning.

Nick Agliolo blasted a pitch over the right field fence in his first home at bat to give Truman a 1-0 lead. Adam Gregorich flared a single to center to score Brendan Trimble and Dave Gambino and the Bulldogs went up 3-0 after one.

Roberts did not allow a hit until the fourth when Logan Riedel singled to start the inning.

The Bulldogs broke things open with three more runs in the fifth. Gambino led off with a double and scored on Jason Priest's RBI single to right. Michael Judson doubled in Priest while Gregorich lifted a sac fly to center scoring Trimble for the 7-0 lead.

Roberts fanned his fifth batter looking to end the sixth and was lifted for Tanner Forck in the seventh after allowing only two hits and walking one in six innings of work.

Gambino went 3-for-4, Priest and Mason King each had two in their Kirksville debuts.

Game 2 Recap:

A two-out, full count single by Mason Bellew broke a 3-3 tie in the top of the fourth inning and the Beavers pounded out 17 hits in the 11-3 win in game two. Tyler Nelson tripled to start the third inning and the BSU would score three times to take the early lead.

Truman responded right back with three of their own in the bottom of the third. Nick Agliolo hit a one-out single and stole second. Agliolo would go to third when Gambino reached on a fielding error by the second baseman and both would score on Priest's double to right center. Trimble singled in Priest to tie the game but BSU got an inning-ending double-play to get out of the jam.

Gunner Olszewski reached on a well-placed bunt single to start the fourth and the Beavers had two on with two out with Bellew up. After falling behind 1-2, Bellew worked the count full before slicing a ball through the right side to score the go ahead runs.

Nelson would hit a pair of two home runs in the later innings to put the game out of reach. He would go 4-for-5 with four runs scored and five RBIs.

The Bulldogs threatened in the eighth as the loaded the bases trailing 9-3 but reliever Luke Benge needed one pitch out of the pen to get the Beavers to the dugout.

Kent Frantz took the loss to fall to 0-2 on the season. Adrian Morris worked four solid innings of relief before surrendering the final two-run homer to Nelson in the ninth.
