RENSSELAER, Ind. – In a key Great Lakes Valley Conference cross-divisional game, the Truman Bulldogs picked up a 63-53 road win over Saint Joseph's (Ind.) College.
 
The win allowed the Bulldogs to keep pace with the Quincy Hawks and Drury Lady Panthers in the GLVC West Division standings. Quincy needed overtime to down Truman's Saturday opponent, the University of Indianapolis 73-72 while Drury trounced Southern Indiana 70-56. The Bulldogs are one game back at 9-3 in the GLVC West with Quincy and Drury at 10-2. Truman is now 15-7 overall and Saint Joseph's falls to 14-8.
 
How It Happened:
  • The Pumas hit their first four shots of the game and raced out to an 8-2 lead in the first quarter.
  • Courtney Strait knocked down the first of her two three-pointers during a 10-0 run to propel the Bulldogs in front 12-8.
  • Strait scored 10 of her 18 points in the first half and the Bulldogs at one point led by 12 in the second quarter 28-16. The lead was eight at the break.
  • SJC's leading scorer Kalea Parks was tagged with two first quarter fouls and sat the entire first half.
  • Parks scored four in a 9-2 run in the third quarter to trim the Bulldogs lead down to one at 35-34.
  • The Bulldogs went without a field goal in the quarter until Strait scored on a fast break with 4:01 left.
  • Parks picked up her third and fourth fouls within a few seconds of one another in the third.
  • Laura Furrer's free throws gave the Pumas a 41-40 lead but Cassidy Clark knocked down a pair to give Truman the lead at the end of the third quarter 42-41.
  • The two teams would exchange the lead five times over a five minute span of the fourth quarter with Kasey Gassensmith putting Truman up for good with a three-pointer at 5:36 left to play at 50-49.
  • The Bulldogs would score seven straight and 14 of the next 16 points to take control of the game.
 
Key Stats/Game Notes:
  • Strait was 5-of-7 from the field with 2-of-3 from long range to lead Truman in scoring with 18 points. That matched her season high from two previous games this season.
  • Strait's 6-for-6 performance from the line allowed Truman to shoot over 50% from the stripe. As a team, the Bulldogs struggled going 19-of-32 overall.
  • The Bulldogs outscored the Pumas by 12 at the line and had 17 more free throw attempts.
  • Fouls plagued SJC as they were whistled 27 times compared to Truman's 20. Parks and Abbey Titzer each fouled out and three other players had four. Puma's coach Steve Harold was also assessed a technical foul in the first half.
  • Cassidy Clark added 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds off the bench and Michalina Tomczak scored 11 while adding another block to her season (45) and career (105) total.
  • The Bulldogs shot 46% in the first half, 36% in the second half and 41.7% for the game. Truman had 42 total rebounds, 12 on the offensive end.
  • Courtney Kvachkoff recorded a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds while playing all 40 minutes. The Pumas shot 34.9% for the game and made only two of 11 three-point attempts.
  • Parks, who came into the game averaging 16.6 points per game was limited to six in 15 minutes of play.
 
 
Up Next:
Truman heads to the University of Indianapolis on Saturday looking to avenge last season's GLVC tournament loss at the hands of the Greyhounds. UINDY is 6-16 overall and 4-8 in the GLVC following their overtime home loss to Quincy on Thursday night. Tip-off is scheduled for noon, central time.
