Softball Opens Home and GLVC Slate with Sweep

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - - Two strong pitching performances and timely at-bats sparked the Truman softball team to a pair of conference-opening wins on Saturday afternoon, as the Bulldogs kicked off the home portion of the 2016 schedule with 2-0 and 6-1 victories against Illinois Springfield.

Game one was all about senior Kindra Henze in the circle, as the all-conference pitcher tossed a complete game one-hitter against the Prairie Stars (8-12, 2-2). Henze surrendered just one hit and one walk while striking out six. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs broke a scoreless tie in the fifth inning when sophomore Ashley Murphy doubled home sophomore Jamie Fowle. Then, in the sixth, freshman Michaela Mooney belted a solo shot over the fence for an insurance tally, giving the Bulldogs the 2-0 victory. Mooney went 3-for-3 in the game, while Murphy tacked on two hits in three at-bats.

In game two, the Bulldogs built a 5-0 lead through four innings as Mooney continued her hot streak with an RBI single in the second inning. Fowle reached on a fielder's choice when a throw to the plate was not in time to catch freshman Christa Reisinger coming down the line from third, and then Murphy drew a bases loaded walk as well in the third for a 3-0 lead. Fowle and Murphy came through again in the fourth, drawing bases loaded walks for two more runs, before UIS got a solo shot in the top of the fifth to get on the board. Truman added the sixth and final run in the last of the sixth when senior Cate Simon got an RBI on a groundout to short, plating Fowle. Senior Kelsea Dorsey improved to 6-2 on the season, as she allowed just four base hits in a complete game effort. She struck out three and needed just 96 pitches to get through the UIS lineup.

Truman, now 10-6 overall and 2-0 in the GLVC, returns to action on Sunday when it hosts McKendree at 12 p.m. at the Truman Softball Park.
