Bulldogs, Bearcats Split GLVC Twinbill in Kirksville

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - - Senior Cate Simon belted two home runs on the day, but the Truman softball team had to settle for a home split with McKendree on Sunday afternoon at the Truman Softball Park in Kirksville.
 
In game one, the Bearcats (8-14, 2-2 GLVC) made an early statement with three solo homeruns in the first two innings to take an early 3-0 lead on the Bulldogs (12-7, 3-1 GLVC). However, the Bulldogs chipped away, getting an RBI single by freshman Morgan McMahan in the second, an RBI groundout by sophomore Jamie Fowle in the third, and a two run shot by Simon in the fourth to regain a 4-3 edge.
 
Truman then posted two more insurance runs in the fifth, when sophomore Riley Cook singled home freshman Christa Reisinger before sophomore Ashley Murphy fouled out deep down the right field line – allowing Cook to score from third for a 6-3 lead.
 
That would be enough for senior starter Kelsea Dorsey, as the right-hander settled down after the early blasts to limit McK to just five hits while striking out nine in a complete game performance. She improved to 7-2 overall, using 107 pitches to get through the Bearcat lineup. Reisinger and junior Lex Van Nostrand tallied two hits apiece, while Simon's two RBIs led the way.
 
Game two was tight throughout, as neither team cracked the scoreboard until the last of the sixth inning, when, with two outs, Simon turned on a full count pitch and hit the scoreboard beyond center field, giving the 'Dogs a 1-0 lead. However, in the top of the seventh, it was McKendree's turn for heroics, as, also with two outs, Rachel Hastings sent one out of the yard, evening the score at 1-all.
 
The Bearcats would then put a three-spot up on the board in the top of the eighth, including an unearned run, with Truman unable to match in the bottom half for the 4-1 loss.
 
Cook totaled two of Truman's five hits, while Simon accounted for the Bulldogs' only run of the game with her third homerun of the season.  Senior Kindra Henze (4-5) started and struck out 10 in 7.1 innings of work, while freshman Lauren Dale allowed a run in two-thirds of an inning of relief.
 
The Bulldogs head to Lewis and UW-Parkside for GLVC doubleheaders next weekend, beginning against LU in Romeoville, Ill., on Saturday, March 19, at 12 p.m.
