Softball Soars Past Flyers to Pick up GLVC Sweep

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - - The Truman softball team broke out the bats on Saturday afternoon against conference foe Lewis University, as the Bulldogs hit .400 as a team in a doubleheader sweep of the Flyers on the road. Senior Whitney Richardson hit .714 with two home runs and five RBI, while senior Kelsea Dorsey picked up both a win and a save in the circle.

In game one, Truman took the early lead when junior Lex Van Nostrand delivered a sacrifice fly in the top of the first inning that plated freshman Christa Reisinger. Lewis responded with two runs in the bottom of the first, but Van Nostrand put Truman back on top in the top of the third when she belted her fourth home run of the season as a two-run shot.

Richardson then accounted for the next three RBI, as the senior turned on her first home run of the season as a solo shot in the fourth inning, before then singling through the right side to plate both senior Cate Simon and sophomore Jamie Fowle in the fifth for a 6-2 lead. Simon then added an RBI single as additional insurance in the sixth, for the 7-2 final.

Sophomore Riley Cook led the way with three base hits, while Reisinger, Simon, and Richardson added two hits apiece. Truman swiped five bases, including three more for Reisinger to pad her GLVC-best number, while Dorsey pitched a complete game, seven strikeout performance. She retired 11 straight in the middle innings and walked just one to pick up her 8th win of the year.

In game two, the Bulldogs found themselves down 2-1 once again – this time through the second inning after a Richardson sac fly and a pair of Lewis runs in the bottom half. Truman hit a pair of home runs in the fourth inning, as Fowle recorded her first of the season – a two run shot – before Richardson went back-to-back with her second of the day and the season.

With the Bulldogs on top, 4-2, Truman added three more in the fifth, as Simon recorded her fourth home run of the year to push the lead to 5-2, before freshman Michaela Mooney singled home both Fowle and sophomore Ashley Murphy for a 7-2 edge. Lewis responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth, but the Bulldog freshmen rose up in the seventh for insurance, as Mooney singled home pinch-runner Nikki Moss, before Reisinger hit her fourth home run – and first collegiate grand slam – to give Truman a 12-5 lead.

Freshman Lauren Dale earned her first collegiate win, tossing 4.2 innings and allowing just two unearned runs, while Dorsey entered in relief in the fifth to close the inning – then pitched the sixth and seventh – to collect her first save of the season. Fowle, Richardson, and Mooney combined to go 8-for-9 with seven RBI, with Reisinger and Simon added two hits apiece as part of a 14-hit game for Truman.

The Bulldogs will head north to Somers, Wis., for a 12 p.m. doubleheader on Sunday, visiting Wisconsin-Parkside (3-19, 0-6 GLVC) to close the weekend road trip.
