Softball Closes Perfect Road Weekend with Sweep

SOMERS, Wis. - - Sophomore Ashley Murphy hit two home runs, and for the second straight day, the Truman State University softball team pounded out 19 runs in a doubleheader road Great Lakes Valley Conference sweep. The Bulldogs defeated UW-Parkside by scores of 12-5 and 7-4 to cap a perfect 4-0 weekend.
 
The Bulldogs, now 15-7 overall and 7-1 in the GLVC, return to Kirksville for a pair of doubleheaders next weekend. Truman will host Missouri S&T at 12 p.m. for two games on Friday, March 25, before welcoming Drury at 12 p.m. for two games on Saturday, March 26.

The Bulldogs lost a 4-0 lead, but exploded for eight runs between the sixth and seventh innings to rout UWP 12-5 in Sunday's opener.
 
After Murphy homered, freshman Christa Reisinger tripled home two runs, and junior Lex Van Nostrand homered to build a 4-0 lead, UWP evened the game with one swing in the fifth, as a grand slam tied the game at four. However, senior Whitney Richardson singled in two runs, and freshman Brooke VunCannon brought in one more with a groundout in the sixth to give Truman the lead again, 7-4.
 
Then, in the seventh, Murphy delivered the final shot, blasting a grand slam deep to center, with Reisinger again bringing home another run with a double later in the inning for the Bulldogs' 12th run. UWP got a solo home run in the bottom half, but Truman's 12 runs and six extra-base hits were more than enough for the win.
 
Murphy finished with two home runs and a double, totaling five RBI, with Reisinger posting a 3-for-4 day with a double and two triples. Dorsey, meanwhile, went the distance, striking out 11 to pick up her ninth win of the season.
 
Game 2 Recap - - Truman 7, UW-Parkside 4

A big third inning gave Truman a lead, which it held all the way to the finish line in a 7-4 defeat of Parkside in Sunday's finale.
 
After Parkside went ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the second, the Bulldogs plated four runs in the third to take a lead. Murphy singled home two runs to put the 'Dogs on top, before sophomore Jamie Fowle capitalized on a UWP error that allowed two more runs to score.
 
UWP closed to within one at 4-3, but a fifth-inning RBI groundout by Fowle, a sixth-inning reach on an error by sophomore Riley Cook, and a seventh-inning RBI double by Richardson pushed the Bulldog lead to 7-3. Again, a solo home run gave UWP one more run in the last inning, but Truman closed out the 7-4 win.
 
Truman had nine hits in the game, with two apiece coming from Cook, Murphy, and VunCannon. Freshman Lauren Dale picked up her first collegiate complete game, striking out five and walking only one to improve to 2-0 in the season.
