Softball Sweeps S&T to Open Weekend

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - - Both the Truman State University softball offense and defense were in alignment on Friday afternoon, as the Bulldogs batted .396 as a team and posted a two game ERA of just 0.50 in a pair of 2-1 and 7-1 victories against Missouri S&T. The Bulldog winning streak ran to six with the win helped Truman improve to 17-7 overall (9-1 GLVC) on the season.

The Bulldogs will host Drury in a league doubleheader at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Saturday (March 26) afternoon in Kirksville. The doubleheader was moved up one hour from an original 12 p.m. start time due to the possibility of rain later in the afternoon.

Game 1 Recap (Box Score) - - Truman 2, Missouri S&T 1
W: Dorsey (10-2); HR: None
The Bulldogs walked off game one against the Lady Miners on Friday, as junior catcher Lex Van Nostrand accounted for both of Truman's RBIs in the game in a 2-1 victory.

Truman got on the board right out of the gate, as reigning Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Week freshman Christa Reisinger singled and stole second in the bottom of the first. After a sacrifice bunt pushed her to third, Van Nostrand laced a single, scoring Reisinger for a 1-0 edge.

S&T would score a run without the benefit of a hit in the top of the fourth, as a walk, hit-by-pitch, and a sacrifice put runners on second and third with one out. A sacrifice fly by Hannah Franceschini evened the game at 1-all.

Truman would finally break through in the home half of the seventh, as once again, Reisinger singled and stole second to start the inning. She moved to third on an infield groundout before sliding in under the tag on a sacrifice fly to right by Van Nostrand for the game-winning run.

Reisinger finished with three singles and three stolen bases, while sophomore Jamie Fowle went 2-for-2 at the plate with a hit-by-pitch. Senior Kelsea Dorsey won her 10th game of the season with a complete game, eight-strikeout performance, as she allowed just three hits and three walks.

Game 2 Recap (Box Score) - - Truman 7, Missouri S&T 1
W: Dale (3-0); HR: Simon (5)
In game two, the Bulldogs again wasted no time putting runs up, as senior Cate Simon doubled home two in front of an RBI single by senior Whitney Richardson to give Truman an early 3-0 lead. Sophomore Riley Cook would add an RBI in the second, before Reisinger scored on a passed ball for the first run of the fourth inning. With the score at 5-0, Cook would scamper home during a Van Nostrand run down, before Simon belted her fifth round-tripper of the year for a 7-0 lead through four innings.

S&T would score an unearned run in the sixth to break the shutout, but Truman out-hit the Lady Miners 13-6 for the game and left 10 runners on base.

Reisinger added a second straight three-hit game and was one of four Bulldogs to steal a base. Four other Bulldogs – Cook, Simon, Fowle, and Richardson – each tallied two hits. Freshman Lauren Dale earned her third win of 2016, pitching five shutout innings, while senior Kindra Henze tossed two innings of relief. Dale did not walk a batter and gave up just four hits while striking out three.
