Softball Posts Two Shutouts in Sweep of DU

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - - Fresh off two dominating performances on Saturday, the Truman softball team ran its winning streak to eight with two shutouts – blanking Drury University by 2-0 and 5-0 scores at the Truman Softball Park on Saturday afternoon.
 
The Bulldogs improved to 19-7 overall (11-1 GLVC) with the shutouts and will travel to Quincy University for a mid-week game this coming Tuesday (March 29) starting at 2 p.m.

Truman replicated its Friday start nearly to a point on Saturday afternoon, as, in the bottom of the first inning, freshman Christa Reisinger singled and stole second base. She then swiped third during sophomore Riley Cook's at-bat, before coming home on a groundout to the shortstop by junior Lex Van Nostrand for an early 1-0 lead. The Bulldogs would sit with the one-run lead until the fourth, when sophomore Jamie Fowle singled into center with runners on first and second. Van Nostrand was held at third but took advantage of a misplay in center field to scamper home for a 2-0 cushion.
 
Senior Kelsea Dorsey made that lead stand, as she improved to 11-2 on the season with a complete game, seven-hit shutout. She struck out nine batters and walked just one.

The Bulldogs jumped all over Drury in the first inning of game two, pounding out six hits and plating three runs in the home half to stake a claim to an early 3-0 lead. Van Nostrand, Fowle, and sophomore Ashley Murphy each recorded RBIs in the inning, with senior Cate Simon adding a double in the middle of the run.
 
Freshman Brooke VunCannon singled home pinch-running junior Valerie Schmidt in the bottom of the fourth with two outs, before Simon blasted her sixth home run of the season as a solo shot in the fifth for the eventual 5-0 fine. Cook and Simon finished with two hits apiece, while the tag team of freshman Lauren Dale (5 IP, 1 H, 0 BB, 2 SO) and senior Kindra Henze (2 IP, 1 BB, 4 SO) carved through the Panther batting order by surrendering just one hit and one walk. Dale earned her fourth win in as many decisions as a starter.
