Bulldogs and Hawks Split Midweek Softball Action

QUINCY, Ill. - - The Truman State University softball team settled for a split with Great Lakes Valley Conference travel partner Quincy University on Tuesday afternoon, as the Bulldogs pounded out a 10-1 victory in game one before a comeback effort came up short in a 7-5 game two defeat.
 
The Bulldogs, now 20-8 on the season and 12-2 in the GLVC, prepare for a split weekend this Saturday and Sunday. Truman visits Maryville in St. Charles, Mo., on the Lindenwood University campus at 12 p.m. on Saturday (April 2) before hosting No. 6 Missouri-St. Louis at 12 p.m. on Sunday (April 3) in Kirksville.

The Bulldogs exploded in the latter innings to take a 10-1 victory in game one against the Hawks. Truman led 2-1 after the second inning, as freshman Brooke VunCannon doubled to right-center field to plate both senior Whitney Richardson and sophomore Jamie Fowle.
 
Senior Cate Simon belted her seventh home run of the season on the first pitch of her fifth-inning at-bat, before the Bulldogs tacked on two more unearned runs in the sixth inning for a 5-1 lead.
 
Van Nostrand then recorded her sixth home run of the year in the top of the seventh, before freshman Morgan McMahan delivered her first collegiate grand slam to straightaway center field to push the lead to 10-1.
 
Freshman Christa Reisinger and Fowle led all 'Dogs with three hits each as part of a 14-hit barrage. Senior Kindra Henze struck out seven and allowed just one run in earning her fifth win of the year, as she went the distance for a complete game.

The script flipped in game number two, as Quincy built a 7-2 lead through six innings. Truman's two runs came in the top of the third, when Van Nostrand delivered a two-RBI base hit that brought home both Reisinger and sophomore Riley Cook.
 
Truman made the home crowd anxious in the seventh, as, after VunCannon led off with her first collegiate home run, Cook, Reisinger, Fowle, and Van Nostrand all reached to cut the deficit to 7-4. After a strikeout, a fielder's choice error kept the bases loaded and plated another run at 7-5. However, a ground ball off the bat of McMahan led the shortstop right to the second base bag, and a throw to first edged the batter to close the game.
 
Reisinger went 2-for-4 with two runs at the top of the order, while Van Nostrand totaled three RBI. Freshman Lauren Dale took the loss, starting and going 2.1 innings, while both seniors Kelsea Dorsey and Henze pitched in relief.
