Bulldogs and Saints Trade One-Run Nailbiters

ST. CHARLES, Mo. - - For the second time this week, the Truman State University softball team took to the road and returned with a split, as the Bulldogs and Maryville University battled to a win apiece on Saturday afternoon on the Lindenwood University campus.

The Bulldogs (21-9, 13-3 GLVC) and Saints (24-6, 12-4 GLVC) traded one-run decisions in a pair of tight contests. For the day, Truman was led by freshman Christa Reisinger's six hits in eight at-bats, which led to five runs and two stolen bases. Junior Lex Van Nostrand added a home run and a team-high three RBI on the day, while senior Kelsea Dorsey earned a win in relief in game one before suffering a starting loss in game two.

Truman will have its toughest battles to-date this season on Sunday afternoon at the Bulldog Softball Park when it welcomes sixth-ranked Missouri-St. Louis (36-3, 14-2 GLVC) for a 12 p.m. twinbill. The Tritons swept Quincy at home on Saturday after splitting at home against Maryville on Tuesday night.

Game 1 Recap (Box Score) - - Truman 4, Maryville 3
W: Dorsey (12-2)
The Bulldogs used a late rally, keyed by errors by the home team, to roar back and take a 4-3 decision in game one. Truman scored in the top of the first when Reisinger singled and came home when senior Cate Simon reached on a Maryville error.

The Saints built a 3-1 lead with runs in the first, fifth, and sixth innings, before Truman got its first two batters aboard in the seventh on an error and a single. Sophomore Kadie Orenstein pinch-hit and brought home both freshman Brooke VunCannon and Reisinger, knotting the game at 3-all. When sophomore Riley Cook re-took her spot in the lineup at second base for Orenstein, she went to third on a groundout by Van Nostrand before coming home three batters later when sophomore Ashley Murphy reached on an error.

That lead would be enough for Dorsey, who was the third Bulldog to pitch in the game, as she parlayed the final out of the sixth into three strikeouts in the seventh for her 12th win. Senior Kindra Henze started and went 5.1 innings, before both freshman Lauren Dale and Dorsey entered in relief.

Both teams recorded nine hits, but the Bulldogs benefited from four Saint miscues in the field.

Game 2 Recap (Box Score) - - Maryville 6, Truman 5
L: Dorsey (12-3); 2B: McMahan (1); HR: Van Nostrand (7); SB: Reisinger 2 (32)
Truman found itself down 4-0 through just two innings, before Reisinger scored again in the top of the third when Cook reached to cut the lead to 4-1. After MU pushed the lead to 5-1 through four innings, Van Nostrand cut the lead in half by blasting a two-run shot – her seventh of the year – in the top of the fifth.

Maryville would score what would eventually be the game-winning run in the bottom of the fifth, but Truman drew close in the top of the sixth on RBI singles by Reisinger and Van Nostrand. However, the Bulldogs couldn't put a base-runner aboard in the seventh this time around, falling 6-5.

Reisinger, Van Nostrand, and Fowle combined for seven of Truman's 11 hits, as the Bulldogs out-hit MU 11-8 in the nightcap. Dorsey started and gave up five runs in 3.2 innings, before Dale pitched the final 2.1 innings of one-run ball to close the game.
