Quincy Rebounds To Even Series With Bulldogs

KIRKSVILLE, Mo.  – The #9 Quincy Hawks used four home runs in squaring the GLVC West Division series with the Truman Bulldogs on Saturday. Quincy won both games by scores of 10-3 and 10-2. Truman will host Drury next weekend for another conference series.
 
Game 1 Recap:
A tough third inning doomed the 'Dogs in the opener against Quincy. The first two reached via walk and double and following a sac fly by Brynn Martinez, the flood gates opened. Dominic Miles singled then David Jacob hit an RBI single to right center to make it 2-0. Jake Walters followed with a three-run homer to right center putting the Hawks up 5-0. Three straight errors by the Bulldogs allowed another run to score.
 
Quincy would add a pair in the fourth to go up 8-0.
 
The Bulldogs mounted a fight in the fifth when Trevor Bell singled and Wyatt Fones received a four-pitch walk. T.J. Wood singled to load the bases. Mason King singled through the right side to score Bell. Nick Agliolo singled to left field that scoring Fones however King rounded third looking to score as well but was called out at the plate on a close call that went Quincy's way to end the threat.
 
Ryan Snyder and Matt Hilmes hit back-to-back homers in the seventh while Fones singled in Adam Gregorich in the bottom of the inning to end the scoring.
 
Braden Shull fanned 10 Bulldogs en route to his third victory of the season. Shull pitched 6.1 innings allowing nine hits and three earned runs while striking out 10 and walking one. Tyler Spencer took the loss as he surrendered seven runs, six earned in three innings of work.
 
 
Game 2 Recap:
Troy Wehde opened the scoring in game two with a base hit up the middle in the second inning that gave Quincy a 2-0 lead. They would had to more on consecutive doubles and a sac fly in the third and had a three-run homer by Brynn Martinez in the fourth to go up 7-0.
 
Nick Agliolo's double in the eight scored Jon Lyons for first base for Truman's first run and Charlie Kreh hit his first collegiate home run in the ninth after Quincy had scored three more in the top of the inning.
 
Mark Niebrugge allowed five hits in eight innings while striking out seven Bulldogs to earn the win. Sam Reuter gave up seven runs, six earned in 3.1 innings pitch to be tagged with the loss.
 
 
Doubleheader Notes:
  • After hitting .217 on Friday, Quincy hit .314 with four doubles and four home runs.
  • David Jacob was 5-for-9 (.556) with a double, two runs scored and three RBIs.
  • There were a total of 25 strikeouts between the two teams on Saturday with Quincy pitchers fanning 19 Bulldogs and Truman pitchers striking out 14 Hawks.
  • Dave Gambino and Nick Agliolo had three hits apiece for Truman.
 
Series Notes:
  • Adam Gregorich led Truman with five hits and T.J. Wood and Dave Gambino had four apiece through the four games.
  • The Bulldogs were 8-of-8 in stolen bases with Wood going 4-for-4.
  • Truman had four extra base hits, two doubles, a triple and a home run compared to 14 by Quincy during the series (nine doubles, five home runs).
  • David Jacob was 8-of-16 with five RBIs to lead Quincy.
  • The Hawks are ranked ninth in the latest National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association poll and first in the Midwest region.
