Bulldogs Split on Road with Former Conference Foe

WARRENSBURG, Mo. - - After a full week off of action, the Truman softball team returned to the field on the University of Central Missouri campus on Monday, picking up a road split with the Jennies by similar 5-1 scores.
 
The Bulldogs (8-6) and Jennies (11-10) traded the same score lines on Monday afternoon, with the host red and white winning game one, 5-1, before the visiting purple and white earned a 5-1 victory in game two.  Junior catcher Lex Van Nostrand hit .600 with a hoem run, a walk, and a stolen base, while senior Kindra Henze tossed a complete game, seven strikeout performance to highlight the day's individual stats.
 
In game one, the Jennies scored solo runs in the first, third, and fourth innings off Bulldog senior starter Kelsea Dorsey (5-2), before Truman put an unearned run on the board in the top of the fifth. After freshman Christa Reisinger reached on an error with one out, she stole second, before then stealing third and coming home when the throw from the UCM catcher sailed into left field. UCM would tack on two more runs in the sixth for insurance and a 9-1 win. Senior Cate Simon had Truman's only two hits in the game, while Dorsey struck out three and gave up nine hits in six innings.
 
In game two, it was Truman who pounced first, as sophomore Riley Cook reached on a one-out error in the top of the first. Van Nostrand then made the Jens pay, belting a two-run shot over the fence for a quick 2-0 Truman lead. The Bulldogs added single runs in the second (unearned run during an at-bat by freshman Michaela Mooney) and third (sophomore Ashley Murphy tripled home Van Nostrand), before UCM etched a run in the fourth to cut Truman's lead to 4-1. But in the next half-inning, Truman capitalized on yet another UCM error, as Cook scampered home on an overthrow during a Simon ground ball to short, pushing the Bulldog edge to the eventual final of 5-1. Van Nostrand went 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBI in the game, while Cook added a 2-for-4 line with two runs at the plate. Henze improved to 2-4 with her complete game effort, working around nine hits by allowing only one run with seven strikeouts.
 
Truman's scheduled doubleheader at Pittsburg (Kan.) State on Tuesday has been canceled due to the threat of inclement weather. The Bulldogs' next game is scheduled for Saturday as the team's home opener against Illinois Springfield. The first pitch of the GLVC doubleheader is set for 12 p.m. at the Bulldog Softball Park.
