Richardson Delivers Walk-Off Single in Softball Home Finale

KIRKSVILLE - - Senior Whitney Richardson singled home the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning on Senior Day Sunday, as the Truman softball team recorded a split with Bellarmine (Ky.) in the 2016 home finale.

The Bulldogs (27-13, 19-7 GLVC) fell 4-1 to the Knights (28-22, 17-9 GLVC) in the opener before rallying twice in the nightcap for a 4-3 victory in eight innings. Sophomore Riley Cook capped a strong weekend at the plate with four more hits in six at-bats, while senior Kindra Henze went the distance in game two to earn her 10th win of the season.

Truman will head to Indiana for two doubleheaders next Saturday and Sunday to close out the regular season portion of the schedule, starting with currently the nation's No. 1 team – Indianapolis (42-3, 23-3 GLVC) – at 11 a.m. (CT) on April 23. The Bulldogs will then visit Saint Joseph's (12-35, 8-18 GLVC) at 12 p.m. (CT) on Sunday, April 24.

Game 1 Recap (Box Score) - - Bellarmine 4, Truman 1
L: Dorsey (13-6); 2B: Van Nostrand (6), Murphy (6), VunCannon (5); SB: Reisinger (37)
Truman broke through first in the bottom of the third inning, as sophomore Jamie Fowle singled to start the inning and moved to second two batters later when senior Cate Simon drew a walk. Sophomore Ashley Murphy then doubled, scoring Fowle from second for the game's first run.

However, the Knights rallied back in the fourth, when a fielding error on what would have been the third out allowed two runs to score. A base hit by the next hitter moved the score to 3-1, before the Knights would tack on an insurance run on an RBI single in the top of the sixth with two outs.

Both teams had eight hits apiece in the game, coming off the bats of eight different Bulldogs. Senior Kelsea Dorsey started and pitched 5.1 innings of four-strikeout ball but took the hard-luck loss by allowing just one earned run.

Game 2 Recap (Box Score) - - Truman 4, Bellarmine 3 (8 innings)
W: Henze (10-6); 2B: Fowle (6); SB: Reisinger (38), Cook (9)
Neither team wasted any time getting on the board in the first inning, as Bellarmine used a two-out single to take an early 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the first, though, after freshman Christa Reisinger singled and stole second, Fowle drove a ball to the wall to score Reisinger easily and cut the lead in half just two batters in. After a sacrifice bunt from junior Lex Van Nostrand, Murphy delivered again with a sacrifice fly to score Fowle and even the game at 2-all.

The Knights would plate a run on a two-out infield single in the top of the second, before Truman clawed back to tie the game again with a single run in the home half of the third. Back-to-back singles by Cook and Reisinger allowed Fowle to sacrifice bunt them over to second and third, before Van Nostrand send a sacrifice fly to left that scored Cook.

The game moved all the way to the eighth inning before the final run of the 2016 home season touched the plate. After Murphy singled to open the bottom of the frame, senior Cate Simon laid down a sac bunt to move pinch-runner Valerie Schmidt to second base. Senior Whitney Richardson then delivered a clutch base-knock into left, and Schmidt beat the play at the plate for the game-winning walk-off run.

Cook went 3-for-3 out of the No. 9 spot in the Bulldog lineup, while Reisinger delivered two more of Truman's eight hits in the game. Henze went the distance in game two, striking out three and allowing just two earned runs to improve to 10-6 on the season.
