KIRKSVILLE, Mo.  – The William Jewell Cardinals pounded out 28 hits in a doubleheader sweep over the Truman Bulldogs on Friday. The Cardinals shutout the 'Dogs 12-0 in game one and rallied to win game two 6-5. The teams will continue their series on Saturday starting at noon.
 
 
Game 1 Recap:
The Cardinals set the tone of the day early as the scored four times in the top of the first en route to a 12-0 shutout of the Bulldogs. Garrett McKinzie started the scoring with a solo home run and from there the Jewell bats remained hot. The next three reached to load the sacks and Jesse Gray grounded out to score an additional run.
 
Tanner Foerschler provided the big blow with a two-run single to left center to make it 4-0.
 
In the second, Andrew Miller blasted a pitch off the right field scoreboard for a two-run shot and a 6-0 lead.
 
The Cardinals would tag starter Kent Frantz for 11 hits and eight runs in the first four innings.
 
Brad Molski struck out six in relief of Frantz.
 
Austin Kretchmar won his seventh game of the season as he scattered nine hits through seven innings and fanned five. 
 
Dave Gambino was 3-for-3, Wyatt Fones and Nick Agliolo were each 2-for-4 for the Bulldogs but the could not scratch across a run.
 
 
Game 2 Recap:
Game two started in similar fashion with Drew Standifer doubling and scoring on a two-out hit by Dane Erbst to put Jewell up 1-0.
 
The Bulldogs got things started offensively in their half of the inning as they responded. Mason King singled up the middle and stole second. He came into to tie the game on a hit by Dave Gambino. Truman had first and third but a sharp lineout to left ending the inning.
 
Truman teed off on starter Zach Hutcherson in the second with Charlie Kreh blooping a single to left and Joey Gardner drew a walk. Both runners moved up on a botched pickoff at second and T.J. Wood got the RBI single to put Truman on top.
 
King followed with a hit to chase Hutcherson from the mound. Nick Agliolo lifted a sac fly to score Wood to put Truman up 4-1.
 
The Cardinals chipped away as they got a run back on a sac fly in the third and tied the game on a two-run homer by Garrett McKinzie in the fifth.
 
Jewell jumped on top in the sixth when Jesse Gray led off with a single and was moved up on a sac bunt. Mike Leeper singled to make it first and third with one gone to bring up Waheed. The senior dropped down the safety squeeze bunt to score the go-ahead run and the Cardinals got an insurance run on a wild throw in an attempted double-play.
 
Vijay Patel was dominating for the Cardinals in relief. He allowed one hit until the seventh when the Bulldogs put their leadoff hitter on. Patel fanned both Wood and King for his fifth and sixth strikeouts for the game. Agliolo kept Truman alive with an RBI single to center but Dave Gambino ground ball was gloved by the second baseman and was thrown out to end the game.
 
Patel picked up his third win of the season going six innings in relief. Alex Hoffmann went the distance for Truman but was saddled with the loss.
 
Doubleheader Notes:
  • The Cardinals hit .384 for the two games with three doubles and four home runs among their 28 hits.
  • Five Jewell players hit .500 or above led by Coleman Waheed's 4-for-6 and Garret McKinzie's 5-for-8 outings.
  • Andrew Miller drove in six runs on the day on a home run and four hits.
  • The Bulldogs had four players hit .500 or above led by Dave Gambino's 4-for-7 afternoon.
  • Nick Agliolo had three hits and drove in a pair of runs.
  • Truman hit .306 for the two games and had a pair of doubles in their 19 hits.
  • Both teams struck out 12 times.
