KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The 14th-ranked Midwestern (Texas) State Mustangs scored 17 points in the second half and held on to down the Truman Bulldogs 31-19 in the 2016 season opener on Saturday night.

After the Bulldogs took a 13-7 lead in the second quarter, the Mustangs churned out scoring drives of 14 plays, 87 yards, 15 plays, 91 yards and 10 plays 89 yards to take command. Truman pulled to within nine on a Jordan Salima three-yard touchdown run but the two-point try failed. Midwestern State added a 32-yard field goal with 3:12 left to ice the game.

The Mustangs totaled 445 yards of offense on 150 yards rushing and 295 yards passing. Quarterback Quade Coward completed 24-of-38 passes with receiver Statron Jones catching nine passes for 120 yards.

Truman gained 255 yards on offense with redshirt freshman quarterback Jaden Barr accounting for 110 yards through the air on 14-of-17 completions and another 33 on the ground on 15 attempts. Malique Robbins had 36 yards rushing and Salima added 30.

The Bulldogs will be back on the Stokes Stadium turf next Saturday afternoon as they will take on Malone (Ohio) University at noon. It will be their second of three non-conference games this season.

How It Happened:
  • The Bulldogs took the opening kickoff and starter Randy Schroeder hit Drew Slager over the middle for a 45-yard conversion on third and seven to move the ball to the MSU 12. The drive stalled out there and Nick Dolezal connected from 22-yards out to give Truman the early 3-0 lead.
  • Midwestern State jumped on top with 5:20 to play in the first quarter on Vincent Johnson's six-yard TD run. The Mustangs converted on a fourth and three at the Bulldog 29 with quarterback Quade Coward finding Tyrique Edwards for 20 yards to keep the drive alive. Johnson would punch it in three plays later.
  • Jordan Brown blocked a MSU punt and Taylor Manes jumped on the loose ball at the Mustangs' 11. A roughing penalty on third down gave the Bulldogs first and goal at the four but the MSU defense held Truman out of the endzone with Dolezal making a 20-yard field goal to pull Truman to within one at 7-6 early in the second quarter.
  • Tanner Graeber missed a 41-yard field goal on MSU ensuing drive and the Bulldogs pounded out a 13-play, 76-yard march that was capped by Jaden Barr's first collegiate TD pass to Kyle Spratt. Barr rolled to his right and found Spratt just across the goaline on a third and seven play to put the Bulldogs up 13-7 with 5:17 left in the half.
  • The Mustangs again converted on a fourth down and overcame a first and 19 as they went 87 yards on 14 plays with Johnson going up the middle to the endzone with 55 seconds left in the half to put MSU on top 14-13.
  • After the kickoff, the Bulldogs lost the football at their own 29 but escaped without allowing any points to be added before half as Jon Scheeler sacked Coward on fourth and 15.
  • MSU got the ball to start the second half and got a free first down on an incomplete pass during a third and six play from their own 13. Truman's Austin Zoda got flagged for a personal foul that gave MSU an automatic first down. The Mustangs then converted on a third and 13 and a third and four before their 15th play of the drive was a nine-yard touchdown run by Adrian Seales to put the Mustangs up 21-13 with 9:54 left in the third quarter.
  • Later, the Mustangs took over at their own 11. Coward completed a 24-yard pass on a third and 11 and a 14-yard pass on the next play to move the ball to the Truman 17. A pass interference in the endzone set up a one-yard TD run by Johnson and a 28-13 lead with 3:34 left in the third.
  • A muffed punt by Statron Jones was recovered by D'Anthony Knight early in the fourth quarter that set up Truman's next touchdown. Knight recovered the ball near midfield. Barr found Joey Shenck for seven yards on third and five and then called his own number for three straight runs to led to a first and goal situation at the MSU five. Jordan Salima, a true freshman, battled his way for the score from three yards out. Truman went for the two-point conversion but the pass was short and broken up that left the score 28-19 with 7:20 left to play.
  • Coward hit Jones over the middle for 36 yards and MSU grinded down the clock before Graeber connected on a 32-yard field goal that put the game out of reach with 3:12 left to play.
