RECAP: Truman Comes Up Short To Southern Indiana

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The University of Southern Indiana earned a 72-67 victory over the Truman Women's Basketball team on Thursday night in the Great Lakes Valley Conference home opener for the Bulldogs. Rachel Edmundson led four Truman players in double-figures with 19 points.
 
The Screaming Eagles (13-2; 5-0 GLVC) and Bulldogs (8-7; 3-3 GLVC) played a tightly contested game from the start. Only once during the game did either team have a lead of more than seven points and there were 10 ties and 10 lead changes.  The game was knotted at 30 at half but USI scored the first six out of the locker room to go up 36-30.
 
Edmundson's three-pointer put the Bulldogs up midway through the third quarter but the visitors regained the lead at the end of three on free throws by Tasia Brewer.
 
Tanner Marcum scored four straight to put USI up by their largest margin of seven with 4:47 to play at 63-56 but the Bulldogs battled back. Cassidy Clark made a free throw followed by a pair from Sloane Totta and a three-pointer by Totta pulled Truman back to within on at 63-62.
 
Following a pair of misses by USI, Edmundson grabbed a rebound. In the pursuit up the court, a technical foul was called against Hannah Wascher but Edmundson made 1-o- 2 from the line to draw the Bulldogs even at 63 apiece.  Truman got possession following the free throws and Clark's shot rimmed off and was secured by Southern Indiana.
 
Kaydie Grooms put the Screaming Eagles back in front with two more makes from the line and Truman missed their final four field goal attempts while USI made 8 of 9 from the charity stripe to win. USI was 3-of-6 from the line in the three previous quarters but 9-of-12 in the crucial fourth.
 
Edmundson was 6-of-18 from the field with three from distance for 19 points and had nine rebounds. Clark added 17 points and nine board and Ashley Hartwig finished with 11 points. Truman shot 34% for the game and was 6-of-21 from three.
 
Marcum led USI with 22 points on 9-of-15 shooting and Grooms finished with 19. Southern Indiana shot 48% from the floor and was 4-of-16 from range while adding seven blocked shots.
 
Truman returns to action on Saturday against the #4-ranked Bellarmine Knights at 1:00 p.m. in Pershing Arena.
