KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - In its second-to-last event before the Great Lakes Valley Conference Swimming & Diving Championships on Feb. 8-11, the Truman men's swimming team faced Missouri S&T for a second matchup this season, this time inside the friendly confines of Pershing Natatorium. The Bulldogs won one event and placed second in eight others before coming up short to the Miners by a score of 188-74.

The Purple and White's dual record now sits at 4-5 while the men from Rolla improved to 3-3 on the season. Will Shanel was the night's winner for Truman as he finished in front of anyone else in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:55.09, which is two seconds faster than his best in that event this season and is the second-fastest for any Bulldog behind Brendan Harris at Northwestern (1:54.25).

Truman boasted a pair of relay teams that finished second in their respective events, the 200 medley relay and the 200 freestyle relay. For the medley, it was Caleb Kruse, Neil Girmus, Shanel, and Sam Heveroh with a time of 1:35.69, while it was Austin Baker, Lliot Gieseke, JT Thayer, and Justin King in the other as they were clocked at 1:27.46.

After them, three Bulldogs were second-best in freestyle events including Girmus in the 50 (21.55), Heveroh in the 100 (47.19) and Thayer in the 200 (1:45.30). Not to be overlooked, Gieseke turned in a lifetime best for the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:45.87 and finished in third. The final three swimmers to take home a second-place finish were Kruse in the 100 backstroke (53.99), Heveroh in the 100 breastroke (59.72) and Austin Mayer in the 200 individual medley (1:58.93).

Both the men and women will host Washington-St. Louis on Saturday with the action set to begin at 1 p.m. It's a big one for the Bulldogs as a special senior class (six men and eight women) will be recognized during their final home event and the Bears are ranked seventh in all of Division III for both men and women.
