RECAP: Truman Opens Crossover with Sweep of Lake Superior State

AURORA, Ill. - The annual Midwest Region Volleyball Crossover Tournament began on Friday in the Land of Lincoln and the Truman State University volleyball team was happy to have it back. The Bulldogs made quick work of Lake Superior State (25-14, 25-18 and 25-22) and swept the Lakers in straight sets giving the Purple and White six sweeps on the season.

Truman improved to 8-11 overall while Lake Superior State dropped to 2-14 on the year. Leading the way for the Bulldogs was Jasmine Brown (10 kills), Savvy Hughes (29 assists), Lauren Wacker (16 digs), and Natalie Brimeyer (seven block assists). The Bulldogs hit a red-hot .261 as a team, their fourth-best attack percentage of 2017, to just .087 by the Lakers.

How it happened...
  • In the first set, Truman scored four of the first five points before Lake Superior State tallied three in a row to tie it up at 4-4.
  • The Bulldogs proceeded to score the next six points in a row to go ahead of the Lakers, 10-4.
  • Lake Superior State stormed back, though, and pulled within one point of Truman three times including 10-9, 11-10 and 12-11.
  • After that final one-point margin, the Bulldogs used a 5-0 run to go up by six, 17-11, and it was never closer than four after that.
  • Once it was 12-11 in favor of the Purple and White, they scored 13 of the final 16 points.
  • Much like the first set, Truman was on the better end of four of the first five points.
  • After a second tie at 5-5, the Bulldogs rattled off eight of the next 11 points to gain a five-point advantage, 13-8.
  • From that point until the end of the set, the Lakers were within two, but never closer.
  • The third set was the tightest one of the day as it saw a combined eight ties and three lead changes.
  • This time, it was Lake Superior State with an early run and five of the first six points.
  • Truman bounced right back with five straight and was ahead by one.
  • The set saw seven more ties, the final at 13-13, before Truman went ahead and never looked back.
Next up, Truman will continue play in the crossover on Saturday with matches against Ohio Valley (10 a.m.) and Saginaw Valley State (4 p.m.). Live stats for both of those matches will be available right here at TrumanBulldogs.com.
