RECAP: Volleyball Sweeps Day Two of Crossover for 3-0 Weekend

AURORA, Ill. - The Truman State University volleyball program has now competed in the Midwest Region Volleyball Crossover Tournament five years in a row and this weekend marks the second time (2014) in which the Bulldogs won all three of their matches. However, that 2014 squad that went 29-4 and made it to the semifinals of the NCAA DII Midwest Regional dropped three sets on crossover weekend while this season's squad went a perfect 9-0 in sets played. Saturday, the Purple and White swept Ohio Valley and Saginaw Valley State.

Truman (10-11) has been winners in three matches in a row and four of its last five while Ohio Valley is now 7-14 and Saginaw Valley State is looking at an overall record of 5-15. For the two matches on Saturday, the Bulldogs were paced by Jasmine Brown (18 kills, five service aces and 20 digs), Savvy Hughes (65 assists), Natalie Brimeyer (10 blocks), and Holly Hildebrand (10 blocks).

Truman 3, Ohio Valley 0
25-16, 25-22, 25-10
  • Without a doubt, Truman turned in its best effort of the season against Ohio Valley.
  • The Bulldogs hit an out-of-this-world .429, over nine percent better than the previous season best .337 vs. West Texas A&M.
  • The Purple and White hit at least .393 in each set including .400+ in two of them with .393 in the first, .480 in the second and .417 in the third.
  • Two of the matches three ties came in the first six points of the first set at 1-1 and 3-3.
  • After the 3-3 tie, Truman used a 9-3 run to go ahead by six, 12-6.
  • From that point until the end of the set, the margin was never closer than five, 12-7, and as large as 11, 21-10, 22-11 and 23-12.
  • Truman scored six of the first seven points and led by as many as 10, twice, before Ohio Valley mounted a furious comeback.
  • The Fighting Scots tallied 10 of the next 11 points to pull within one, 20-19.
  • However, the Bulldogs then scored three in a row and held on for the set victory.
  • The third set saw complete domination from the Purple and White.
  • Truman gave up the first point, but took it to Ohio Valley the rest of the way for a 15-point set victory.
Truman 3, Saginaw Valley State 0
27-25, 25-20, 26-24
  • The day's second match was much, much closer than the first as it featured a combined 33 ties and 14 lead changes.
  • Early on in the first set, Truman led by as many as five, 11-6 and 12-7.
  • However, Saginaw rattled off the next five points in a row to tie things up at 12-12.
  • The two teams went back and forth after that with nine more ties, the final at 25-25 as part of a three-point run for the Bulldogs to finish it.
  • Just like the first set, Truman had a 9-5 advantage in the second.
  • Saginaw battled back to knot it up at 11-11 and after more even play that led to a 16-16 tie, the Bulldogs got hot.
  • They used a 7-0 spurt to lead by seven, 23-16.
  • The Cardinals slimmed the margin to four twice, but that wasn't enough as the Bulldogs went ahead 2-0.
  • Early on in the third set, neither team led by more than two until Saginaw was ahead by three, 12-9.
  • Truman battled back, though, and had a one-point lead, 18-17.
  • Four ties later, Truman scored the final two points to take the set and the match in a sweep.
Next up, Truman will jump right back into Great Lakes Valley Conference play with a 7:00 match at Maryville on Friday.
