KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Truman State University volleyball team won the first set at Rockhurst on Saturday afternoon, 25-21, but dropped the next three with scores of 25-15, 25-14 and 25-16 in the 2017 regular-season finale.
Truman (17-14, 9-9 GLVC) had its three-match winning streak snapped while Rockhurst (26-6, 14-4 GLVC) has been victorious for eight matches in a row. Saturday, the Bulldogs were led by
Emma Berthold (11 kills),
Savvy Hughes (32 assists),
Lauren Wacker (39 digs), and
Natalie Brimeyer (10 block assists). That marks a new career high for Wacker and the Purple and White's 16 total blocks tied the season's best.
How it happened...
- In the first set, Rockhurst scored the first three points before Truman rattled off seven of the next eight to go up by three, 7-4.
- The Bulldogs held on to the lead for awhile before the Hawks used a 5-1 run midway through to knot it up, 13-13.
- After three more ties, the final one at 17-17, the visitors went ahead by two, 19-17.
- The home team called a timeout, but it didn't help, and Truman held on for the set victory.
- For the next three sets, Rockhurst dominated the action, and Truman had just two leads including 1-0 in both the third and fourth sets.
Next up, Truman will begin play in the GLVC Tournament on Friday, Nov. 17 at 2:30 p.m. in East Peoria, Ill. at the EastSide Centre. The Bulldogs are the seven seed and will take on two-seeded McKendree (22-7, 16-2 GLVC) in the quarterfinal round.
