RECAP: Bulldogs Fall In Houghton 38-14 To Michigan Tech

Stats

HOUGHTON, Michigan – The Michigan Tech Huskies scored 24 straight points to break a 14-all tie and down the Truman Football team 38-14 in the season opener on Thursday night.

The Bulldogs took the lead 5:27 left in the first quarter when Jaden Barr connected with true freshman tight end Jake Ellis for a three-yard TD pass in the back of the endzone but then watched as MTU blitzed down the field with running back John Williams going untouched for 45 yards and the equalizer.

The Huskies then blocked a Truman punt attempted and Graham Hubbell was able to secure the bouncing ball in the endzone for a 14-7 lead.

That lead didn't last long. After the ensuing kickoff, Barr raced 75 yards to pay dirt and tied things back up at 14 apiece. Barr finished with his first 100-yard game as a rusher with 116 yards on 12 carries.

After holding the Huskies out of the endzone following a first and goal situation, Evan Gornick converted on a 25-yard field goal and the lead with 6:36 left before half at 17-14.

Williams busted another long run, going 68 yards that sent the Huskies into the locker room with a 24-14 advantage. Williams finished with 21 carries for 176 yards on the night.

The second half kickoff set the tone for the rest of the game. Jacob Wenzlick took the kick 66 yards and was only stopped by Truman kicker Brock. Four plays later it was Williams again for the score and a 31-14 lead.

Michigan Tech added one final touchdown, a 25-yard pass from Jake Brown to Kevin Kirkland in the fourth quarter.

The Huskies accumulated 357 yards of total offense with 236 coming on the ground. The Bulldogs had 209 yards with 135 rushing. Truman was only 1-of-14 on third downs plays.

The Bulldogs will play a second road game in the non-conference portion of their schedule when they travel to Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa next Saturday. The Mustangs were ranked fourth in the preseason NAIA coaches' poll.
