KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - The Truman State University swimming program sent off its 13 seniors (six men, seven women) in style on Saturday afternoon inside Pershing Natatorium. The Bulldogs swept visiting William Jewell as the men won by 35, 120-85, and the women followed suit with a 109-point victory, 157-48.
The women also swept the season series with William Jewell after winning in Liberty on Nov. 4 (168-94) while the men avenged an earlier-season loss at the hands of the Cardinals (151-111).
"The team had an energy that I haven't seen all year at a dual meet," said interim head coach,
Jerod Simek. "I think they really wanted to send the seniors out the right way and that was apparent in the swims and the results. Overall, the seniors showed great leadership and swam great today. Each and every one of them were able to dig deep and show both myself and Quentin (Bishop) great things heading into conference."
On the men's side, Truman won eight of a possible 11 events while the women had a first-place showing in all but one of the 11 events. For the men, they took home first, second and third place in the 1000 free. In that event,
Joel Schawe was the winner with a time of 9:49.20 while
JT Thayer was in second (9:52.84) and
Riley Olson rounded out the top three (10:02.37).
Back over to the women's results, the Bulldogs earned the top three spots on the podium in four events. For the 1000 free,
Emma Barnett won (10:25.49),
Jasmine Roghair touched the wall second (10:43.53) and
Megan Mensinger was behind her in third (10:58.10).
The other three top-three sweeps for the women came in the 50 free, 100 free and 200 back. In the 50 free, the top three went
Jamie Fitzpatrick (24.38),
Libby Opfer (25.07) and
Loriel Hutchinson (25.50). Next, in the 100 free, Truman's top placers read like this:
Nikki Sisson in first (53.92), Roghair in second (55.14) and Hutchinson in third (55.41). Last, but certainly not least, in the 200 back, the top 'Dogs were Barnett (2:07.52),
Lauren Massot (2:08.91) and
Mikayla Kempf (2:10.48).
Next up, the men are at Missouri S&T on Friday (6 p.m.) and the women are off until the coed meet that following Saturday at Washington-St. Louis (1 p.m.).
