Truman Game Notes (.PDF)
KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - What an absolute classic of a game it was between the Truman State University men's basketball team and Drury on Martin Luther King Jr. Day inside Pershing Arena. As good as it was, the Bulldogs' five-game winning streak was snapped in overtime, 98-96, and they must regroup for a pair of tough GLVC tests on the road. Truman first travels to Indianapolis on Thursday (7:30 p.m. ET) before Southern Indiana the following Saturday (3 p.m.).
In the loss vs. the Panthers, five scorers reached double-figures for the sixth-straight contest and four of them scored 10 or more for the eighth game in a row. Out in front was
Jake Velky with a game-high 25 points to go with six assists, three rebounds and a 9-of-19 shooting performance from the field. The defending GLVC Player of the Week,
Zach Fischer, was next up with 20 points and seven boards.
Also in that game, the Bulldogs' 15th double-double of the year came from
Brodric Thomas thanks to 15 points, 11 rebounds (career high and five assists. That effort gave Thomas five double-doubles for his career and three in the Purple and White.
Nathan Messer and
Jack Green represented the final Truman scorers in double-figures with 14 points and 13 points, respectively.
Scouting Indianapolis
Indianapolis head coach, Stan Gouard, is in his 10th season at the helm of Indianapolis men's basketball with an overall record of 176-97 (.645). After dropping the season opener to Northwood (73-71), the Greyhounds proceeded to win five in a row, but have had an up-and-down journey since then. Since the 5-1 start to the year, Indianapolis has gone 5-4, but is coming off a big home win over Lewis in overtime, 80-79. There are four Greyhounds putting up at least 10 points per game including Ajay Lawton (14.6), Eric Davidson (14.4), Tate Hall (13.9), and Jesse Kempson (12.9). Kempson is the team's leading rebounder (5.7) and Lawton is the ringleader in assists (4.9).

Scouting Southern Indiana
Southern Indiana is coached by Rodney Watson in his ninth season and Watson has accumulated an overall record of 196-59 (.769). At one point in 2017-18, the Screaming Eagles were 12-3 overall, 3-0 in GLVC play and had won 11 of their last 12 games. However, Southern Indiana has since dropped two of three against some of the league's tougher competition. With that being said, the Screaming Eagles now come home for three in a row where they are perfect at 9-0. Gone is Jeril Taylor, but back is junior and two-time GLVC Player of the Week, Alex Stein. Stein is first in the league in free throw percentage (.959), second in scoring (19.2) and ninth in field goal percentage (.477).

Twice as Nice
Monday afternoon,
Zach Fischer became the third Bulldog to receive GLVC Player of the Week honors twice as
Mike Carlson did so during the 2013-14 (Jan. 20 and Feb. 3) campaign and Seth Jackson followed suit in 2014-15 (Dec. 8 and Feb. 2). Fischer picked up double-doubles No. 10 and 11 while averaging 18.5 points, 11.5 rebounds and two assists per game as Truman won a pair of road games over Missouri S&T (96-73) and Rockhurst (107-95). In the process, the 6-4 forward shot an efficient 15-of-22 (68.2 percent) from the field, 3-for-5 from behind the arc and converted four of his five free throw attempts.
Â
Last of the Unbeatens
Indianpolis is the only remaining team in the GLVC that Truman has yet to beat with the Greyhounds having taken all four of the meetings. Earlier this season, the Bulldogs picked up their first-ever victory over Lewis and will look to slay another dragon on Thursday night in Nicoson Hall.
Â
Hometown Kid
Southern Indiana's Alex Stein, one of four Evansville natives on the Screaming Eagles' roster, is building up quite the resume as a Division II player. Since Stein stepped onto campus prior to the 2015-16 campaign, he has played all 78 of the team's games with a GLVC Freshman of the Year honor and a CoSIDA Academic All-District nod last season. The 6-3 sharp shooter is nine points away from 1,300 for his career and has averaged 16.6 during that time.
Â
Up Next
Truman will continue a four-game road trip with showdowns at Central division-leading Maryville on Thursday, Jan. 25 and Drury a week later on Feb. 1.
