ST. LOUIS - The Truman State University men's and women's swimming teams closed out their 2017-18 regular season at Washington-St. Louis on Saturday afternoon at I.E. Millstone Pool. The 20th-ranked Bulldog women fell to the No. 7 Bears, 151-142, while the men came up short as well, 196-92.
"Today we saw some solid swims out of people," said interim head coach,
Jerod Simek. "We swam very tired, especially our men's team, after racing for two days. There was a lot of fine tuning with conference right around the corner and people were doing some of their third and fourth events for us to get a better gauge heading into taper and conference."
Starting with the men, they took home first place in four events and the action was highlighted by
JT Thayer. Thayer was the first to touch the wall in both the 200 free (1:43.50) and the 500 free (4:42.73). The other two wins came from
Lliot Gieseke in the 50 free (21.72) and
Will Shanel in the 200 IM (1:55.06).
Switching over to the women, they were victorious in seven events. Beginning with a pair of relays, the team of
Grace Fodor,
Natalie Galluzzo,
Libby Opfer, and
Nikki Sisson were first in the 200 medley relay (1:50.40). Also, in the 200 free relay, the quartet of
Jamie Fitzpatrick, N. Sisson, Opfer, and
Jasmine Roghair was on top of the podium (1:39.20).
For individual wins, three of them came in freestyle events including N. Sisson in the 50 (25.18), Fitzpatrick in the 100 (53.91) and Roghair in the 500 (5:13.19). The final two wins of the day for the women came in the 200 breast from Galluzzo (2:28.50) and Opfer in the 100 fly (59.62).
Next up, as mentioned above, the men and women will be competing in the GLVC Swimming & Diving Championships on Feb. 7-10 at the Crawfordsville High School Aquatic Center in Crawfordsville, Ind.
