Truman Game Notes (.PDF)

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - The Truman State University men's basketball team is riding the high of its 75-74 buzzer-beating win at Maryville last Thursday when Jake Velky hit a 35 footer as time expired. With the win, Truman handed Maryville its first home loss of the season (11-1) and snapped the Saints' five-game winning streak. The Bulldogs improved to 2-3 in games decided by five points or less this year, 8-2 in the all-time series with Maryville and head coach, Chris Foster, is now 5-0 against the Saints. Not to mention the fact that Velky became the 29th member of Truman's 1,000-point club. It took the Waverly, Iowa native just as many games (78) to reach the milestone as former Bulldog great, Seth Jackson, who is third on the school's career scoring chart with 1,655 points.

Next up, the Purple and White will have a pair of rematches this week with a road test at Drury on Thursday before hosting Rockhurst the following Saturday inside Pershing Arena. Truman enters this week of games with five players still averaging at least 10 points per game including Zach Fischer (18.1), Velky (16.7), Brodric Thomas (16.2), Nathan Messer (11.2), and Jack Green (10.9).

Scouting Drury
Since Drury last played Truman on Jan. 15 in Pershing Arena, the Panthers have gone 2-2 with wins over Illinois Springfield (80-60) and William Jewell (86-67). The two defeats came right after that Jan. 15 contest and were against then-No. 6 Bellarmine (82-62) and Indianapolis (91-82). The Bulldogs will face yet another team that is very good at home as the Panthers are 9-1 inside the O'Reilly Family Event Center with their only loss coming against McKendree back on Dec. 2 (100-91). Drury has very balanced scoring, but its two scorers averaging double-figures are Isaac Johnson (12.0) and Andrew Ballock (11.0).

Scouting Rockhurst
Since Truman's 107-95 win over Rockhurst in Kansas City on Jan. 13, the Hawks have won three games and lost two of them. Those three victories were over Lewis (79-70), Missouri S&T (94-69) and Haskell Indian Nations in a non-conference affair ((103-77). The two losses for the Hawks in that span were on the road against Wisconsin-Parkside (81-77) and Missouri-St. Louis (79-49). Just like Truman, five Rockhurst players average double-figures including Curtis Lewis (16.1), Quinton Curry (13.1), Auston Rushing (11.8), Alex Hagan (10.3), and Eddie Muench (10.0).

Last Time Out - Panthers
The Bulldogs came back from as many as 16 down to force an extra period and even led by one with under five seconds left, but the Panthers' Andrew Ballock sunk a three from the left corner as time expired to win it, 98-96. Truman had its five-game winning streak snapped while Drury made it seven-consecutive victories. The Bulldogs had also won three straight in the all-time series of which the Panthers tied at eight victories apiece after Monday's heartbreaker.

Last Time Out - Hawks
The Bulldogs defeated Rockhurst 107-95, scored 100 points three times in a season for the first time since the 2014-15 campaign and eclipsed 90 points in each victory during the five-game winning streak. The Bulldogs had no problem spreading the wealth as five scorers reached double-figures for the fifth-straight game and four of them scored 10 or more for the seventh contest in a row. During the five-game spurt, four different players averaged at least 16 points and six were scoring at least eight per game.

Next Up
Truman will play its final two road games of the 2017-18 regular season on Thursday, Feb. 8 at William Jewell (7:30 p.m.) and Saturday, Feb. 10 at Quincy (3 p.m.).
