KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - For the first time all season, the Truman State University volleyball team has dropped two-straight matches inside Pershing Arena. Saturday, the Bulldogs hosted McKendree and the Bearcats got on the bus with a win after set scores of 25-19, 19-25, 20-25, 25-23, and 15-11.
With the loss, Truman dropped to 18-7 overall and 8-5 in the GLVC while McKendree improved to 14-10 on the season including 8-4 in league play. The Bulldogs were led by
Ellie Kaat (pictured/21 kills),
Savvy Hughes (54 assists),
Sam Yancy (two aces),
Meghan Gasper (two aces),
Ambria Whitlock (seven blocks), and
Lauren Wacker (25 digs).
How it happened...
- After Truman scored the first two points of the first set, McKendree answered with the next five in a row and held the lead for awhile.
- The Bulldogs battled back, though, and eventually tied the match at 13-13, the second and final deadlock of the set.
- The Bearcats then used a 5-0 run of its own to go up 18-13 and didn't look back.
- After that, the home team was never closer than three when it was 21-18.
- The second period was the closest one of the match as it saw a combined 10 ties and three lead changes.
- Neither team was able to get a lead of more than three points until Truman did so at 17-14.
- That point came in the midst of a 4-0 spurt for the Bulldogs that put them up 18-14.
- That would be all the momentum the hosts needed as they held on to tie the match, 1-1.
- In the third set, McKendree turned in its worst hitting percentage of the match at .081 to Truman's .250, and the Bulldogs went ahead in the match, 2-1.
- In the fourth, The Bulldogs scored the first three points and led all the way until the Bearcats finally tied it up for the first time at 15-15.
- From there on out, the visitors outscored the home team by two, 10-8 to send it to a fifth and deciding set.
- McKendree rode that wave with a 4-0 run to open the set before a 7-2 Truman run that gave it the lead, 7-6.
- The Bearcats followed that run with four-straight points to lead it 10-7.
- The Bulldogs cut the deficit to one twice, but couldn't get over the hump and McKendree won it in five.
Next up, Truman will host No. 14 Rockhurst, loser in three of its last four, on Tuesday with first serve set for 7 p.m.
