RECAP: Bulldogs Shoot Down Flyers To Earn Trip To GLVC Final Four

Box Score

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The Truman Bulldogs picked the most opportune time to defeat Lewis University for the first time as a member of the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Bulldogs scored three unanswered goals to beat the Flyers 3-1 in the quarterfinal round of the GLVC Tournament on Sunday.

The Bulldogs, the regular season tri-champion with McKendree and Southern Indiana, will face #5 seed Bellarmine at 8:30 p.m. (ET) at the Woerhle Athletic Complex in Jeffersonville, Indiana on Friday. The Knights and 'Dogs played to a scoreless draw in Kirksville on October 14. Bellarmine defeated #4 Quincy 2-1 in their quarterfinal match.

For the third straight contest, Truman allowed their opponents to take the early lead. Kianna Clark scored an unassisted goal from the right corner of the 18-yard box that got past the outstretched arms of Beth Hopwood for the 1-0 lead in the 14th minute. It was Clark's first goal of the season.

Truman built momentum with the wind at their back later in the half. The Bulldogs had a series of corner kicks in a four minute span with Chance Douglass sending a ball in that was headed by Jen Seithel then roofed into the net by Hanna Hickey for the equalizer. It was Hickey's third goal of the year, first assist for Seithel and third for Douglass.

Douglass would not be done getting on the stat sheet. Three minutes later she harassed a Lewis defender into a turnover on the right side, she then strode in and blasted a ball into the net for her third goal of the year, unassisted to give Truman a 2-1 lead.

The Bulldogs came out as the more aggressive team at half and it paid off. Douglass gained control again of the ball on the right side and lofted a cross to the far post. Kacie Trueman volleyed the ball into the goal for her first of the season in the 65th minute of play.

The Flyers tried to press as the match moved on but Hopwood and the Truman defense stood their ground. Hopwood finished with five total saves, four in the second half.
It is Truman's first win over Lewis since joining the league in 2013. The previous six matches saw Lewis with two wins and the other four finishing in ties. Lewis had won the regular season match against Truman in Kirksville 2-1 and were atop the GLVC standings as late as a week ago before two overtime losses at home dropped them to the eighth seed in the tournament.

The Bulldogs advance to the semifinal round for the fifth time in six years. They were the 2015 tournament champions.

In the other semifinal,#3 Southern Indiana will take on #7 Rockhurst.
