RECAP: Truman Track & Field Begins Indoor Season In Maryville

MARYVILLE, Mo. – Senior Cassidy Smestad was the winner in the Shot Put as the Truman Track & Field teams kicked off the indoor season at the inaugural Mel Tjeersdsma Classic on the campus of Northwest Missouri State on Saturday.

The meet christened the brand new $20 million dollar Hughes Fieldhouse, a public/private partnership facility between the city of Maryville and Northwest Missouri State University.

Smestad took the top podium spot in the Shot Put with a winning mark on her second attempt. That measurement was 44-03.75 that would have matched the NCAA provisional mark from last indoor season but was just shy of the new provisional mark.

Hannah Oberdiek turned in a personal indoor best in the Long Jump by going 18-04.50 and placed third.

Newcomer Katie Alexander finished eighth in her first collegiate 800 race. Alexander ran 2:28.16.

Hannah Sells eclipsed her top indoor mark in the Pole Vault. Sells cleared 11-02.50 and finished fourth.

Brandon Hackamack had the highest individual finish on the men's side. Hackamach cleared a personal best 45-07.75 in the Triple Jump and finished fourth in the event.

Elijah Farrales broke the 50 second barrier in the indoor 400. Farrales ran 49.12 to take fifth.

Freshman Nathan Stinson was the first of four Bulldogs in the Mile run. Stinson placed sixth with a time of 4:29.22.

This will not be the Bulldogs only trip to the new facility in Maryville. Truman will compete in the Bearcat Invitational on February 8.

Truman's next indoor meet is on January 19 at the Dutch Athletic Classic hosted by Central College.
