Truman Game Notes (.PDF)

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - Nearly three months into the 2017-18 regular season and the Truman State University men's basketball team will see a pair of opponents for the first time. The Bulldogs will make their final road trip of the regular season when they travel to William Jewell on Thursday for a 7:30 p.m. start followed by Quincy on Saturday with tip set for 3 p.m.

This past week, the Purple and White split a home and home with an 88-71 loss at Drury before defeating Rockhurst inside Pershing Arena on Alumni Weekend, 82-71. Right now in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Point Rating System, Truman is in fourth, William Jewell ranks 10th and Quincy is second-to-last in 14th.

The Bulldogs continue to boast five scorers averaging double-figures including Zach Fischer (17.5), Jake Velky (16.7), Brodric Thomas (16.4), Nathan Messer (10.6), and Jack Green (10.2). Thanks to 10.2 rebounds per contest, Fischer continues to average a double-double with six games to play in the regular season. Fischer and Maryville's Nolan Berry are the league's only two players averaging a double-double and the Truman big man also comes in at sixth for scoring.

Scouting William Jewell
William Jewell is in year No. 39 under the leadership of legendary head coach and five-time Hall of Famer, Larry Holley. Since his first season as a collegiate head coach in 1969-70 at Central Methodist before two years at Northwest Missouri and then William Jewell, Holley has accumulated an overall record of 903-557 (.618 winning percentage). During his 39 years as the head coach of the Cardinals, Holley's conference record is 423-220 (.658). This season, William Jewell has gone 9-1 at home with its only loss coming against the No. 7 team in the nation, Bellarmine (80-58).

Scouting Quincy
The 2016-17 season marked the end of the Marty Bell era at Quincy after 14 seasons as he gave way to one of his assistants, Ryan Hellenthal. Hellenthal had his work cut out for him after so much talent left from a Hawk squad that went 25-7 overall and 14-4 in GLVC play in 2016-17. Fast forward to this season and Quincy is 7-15, 3-10 in league action and has dropped three in a row. With that being said, the Hawks have been tougher at home as six of their seven wins have come inside Pepsi Arena. Three Hawks average double-figures in scoring including Demetrius Houston (13.7), Marcus Hinton (11.5) and Ryan Briscoe (10.2).

No. 3 in the Program, No. 1 in your Heart
After missing the season's first five games due to injury and coming off the bench against Lincoln, Brodric Thomas has been a cornerstone in the Truman starting lineup ever since. Thomas recently broke into the GLVC's statistical rankings after finally playing enough games to qualify and he's proving just how valuable he is to the Bulldogs. Among the league leaders, No. 3 is tied for third in blocks per game (1.3), tied for fourth in assists per game (4.5), tied for fourth in steals per game (1.6), tied for eighth in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.8), 11th in scoring (16.4), tied for 12th in minutes played per game (32.3), 16th in free throw percentage (.768), 19th in rebounds per game (5.9), and 19th in field goal percentage (.449).

Velky Record Watch
As only a junior, No. 24, Jake Velky, continues to make his rapid climb up the Truman career record books. Entering this week's road trip, Velky is fourth in free throw percentage (85.2), seventh in three point percentage (42.7), eighth in three-pointers made (197), and ninth in three-pointers attempted (461).

Points, Points, Points
William Jewell is one of the best offensive teams in the GLVC as it is second in the league in points per game with 86.9 per outing behind just Drury's 89.0. Two Cardinals, Keith Hayes (18.7 PPG) and Patrick Whelan (18.5), are second and tied for third, respectively, in the conference in scoring. Those two are joined in double-figures by Byron Harp (13.8) and Pharroh Gordon (13.7).

Up Next
After this road trip, Truman will play four-consecutive games inside the friendly confines of Pershing Arena to finish up the 2017-18 regular season.
